Games coming out in July 2009
As of now June has been a pretty good month, with a few heavy hitters to come in the remaining days of the month.
July is the month when the gaming industry usually slows down a bit, and a lot fewer games come out.
As per usual, July is not a big month this year either. I actually had trouble getting more than 10 games on the list of “good games coming out”. Actually, I didn’t even manage that, since some are doubles that will go in the multi-platform section, and I got a good part of the releases for the list from Japan.
Needless to say, the list this month is a bit lackluster.
As always, games with (JAPAN) next to their names are japanese games, and we’ll start with the multi-platform games this time.
Multi-platform releases
Tales of Monkey Island (PC, Wii)

Monkey Island is AWESOME. And a new entry in the series is more than welcome. It kinda sucks that it’s going the episodic way, but it’s still welcome, and hopefully it’s gonna be badass just like Guybrush… He can hold his breath for 10 minutes, how is that not badass? I’m partial towards the PC version (the best way to do point-and-click gameplay, after all), but the wii will get a taste of Guybrush as well.
The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition (PC, Xbox 360)

If Tales of Monkey Island wasn’t enough Monkey Island for one month, a remake of the original Secret of Monkey Island is coming to PC and 360. Full of dialog and awesomeness. It’s coming on Steam on the PC, by the way.
The King of Fighters XII (PS3, Xbox 360)

Featuring some of the best 2D graphics yet(technically), and being part of the really good King of Fighters series, this looks really fun. *Edit* so seemingly I missed this in all the release lists i checked, because now it’s there and coming in july. Awesome.
PS3
Watchmen: The End is Nigh Complete Experience

This PS3 exclusive pack includes both parts of the downloadable game, but also the blu-ray movie. An interesting idea, though the game doesn’t seem that great, from what I saw in the demo(standard beat ‘em up with not much special). I might as well mention the 360 is also getting the second part of the game, but not the special edition with both parts AND the movie in blu-ray format.
Katamari Damacy Tribute (JAPAN)

I don’t like Katamari, it’s really not fun to play. But it’s quite popular, so it’s on the list. This will come to the US as “Katamari Forever”, but for those who don’t want to wait, they can import it next month!
Wii
Wii Sports Resort

The flagship Wii Motion Plus game, made to show off what the new peripheral can do. And of course a sequel to the “popular at first but lackluster after a week” Wii Sports. People are incredibly excited for this, but I don’t get it. The Wii Motion Plus doesn’t seem to be adding that much to the gameplay (other than the archery game that looks pretty well done), and just like the first Wii Sports it will probably get boring after a week or so.
<rant>And having to pay EXTRA for wii motion plus adapters for multiplayer(which is the main draw of the game… right?) is idiotic. The wii controller is already expensive enough if you want to buy one + a nunchuk, but now they add an extra cost for something that makes the Wiimote work LIKE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO FROM THE START? That, my friends, is bullshit. They should give those out for free, like they did with the stronger wrist-straps and Wii Condoms. </rant>
Little King’s Story

I actually have no idea what this game is about. The gameplay videos made it look incredibly boring. But Wii-only owners seem to be hyping this up quite a bit, so it’s on the list.
PC
Street Fighter IV

Yeah, I’m trying hard to find games to add to the list. The PC release of SFIV. Guess it’s a fine release if you didn’t get the PS3 or 360 version. And there’s also a special edition of the game that comes with a fightpad (probably the 360 fightpad).
PSP
Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Do to Deserve This?

I gave my impressions on the demo a few weeks back, and now it’s going for real. Interesting and completely original gameplay, this could end up being a really good game on the PSP, and one of the most unique games on the system as well.
DS
Dragon Quest IX: Hoshizora no Mamoribito (JAPAN)

The latest numbered Dragon Quest game… on a handheld? That’s right. Coming to japan next month, a game that will top the charts for at least a few weeks, seems to be shaping up nicely. I’m waiting for the US release, but if you can read japanese, why not?
Katekyoo Hitman Reborn! DS Flame Rumble X – Mirai Chou-Bakuhatsu!! (JAPAN)

What’s that I hear? Oh, it’s me grasping at straws to try and add games to the list again. This is a game just for Hitman Reborn fans (which there should be more of since this is one of the most interesting Shonen series at the moment). It’s the third game of the series. The first one was a bit lame with bad controls and it was way too hard. The second was a big step up and provided fun gameplay. Let’s see if the third one will be up to snuff.
Console, ds, Games, Handheld, News, PC, Preview, ps3, psp, Rant, wii, xbox 360

New releases daily! Free shipping.

Despite the low number of worthwhile releases in July, I’ll still be getting a few games.
Tales of Monkey Island
Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time Re-Shelled (kinda sucks that I only have 1 Xbox 360 controller though…)
Those are all great choices.
Turtles in Time is a timed exclusive and will make it to PSN, with free online co-op most likely. ^^
I want monkey island, but I never got to play the old ones, might start with those.
Yeah, might just wait for the PSN release for Turtles in Time… damn timed exclusives suck…
@David
You’re missing out, Monkey Island games are awesome. Well worth playing through at least the first 3 (dunno about the fourth, kinda missed that one).
I already have Tales of Monkey Island pre-ordered.
Oh I know. I love point and clicks adventures, just kind of hard to get into the mood to put time into them.
I want more Sam and Max, but that will do too.
There’s two Monkey Island titles coming out soon. One of them I am aware, comes out soon on xbla that is a remake of the old one.
@Victor
Yeah, there’s a remake of the first MI coming soon to PC and XBLA, but there’s no release date yet. If it does get an official date I’ll add it to the list, of course. I’ll be sure to get it too.
