PS3 beta impressions – Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta

Well, anyone who bought inFAMOUS got access to the Uncharted 2 beta. Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if some people bought inFAMOUS just for the beta code.

So after playing quite a few matches, I think I can talk about it a bit.

Read on then!

What’s in the beta?
There’s 3 things you can do in multiplayer: create a game where you’ll invite friends who also have the beta, matchmaking and watching recorded matches.

The beta includes 3 gameplay modes: Deathmatch, Plunder and Cooperative. Each of those are played in teams. Plunder and Deathmatch are 2 5-player teams (10-players total, just in case you didn’t feel like counting), and Cooperative uses one 3-player team. There’s 2 maps for the competitive modes, and 1 map in Cooperative.

How does it play?
Control-wise, it plays just like the first Uncharted. There is litterally no differencein the way it plays. Uncharted controlled great, Uncharted 2 controls just as well.

In the game, you can climb buildings, use cover, throw grenades, shoot your guns, use melee attacks… all the stuff you could before. But now since you’re against other players, you have to think about where people could attack from and check those locations so that you don’t get caught by surprise. The multiplayer element is really cool.

As for the modes… Well you get 3 modes of play. Deathmatch is the usual Team Deathmatch, the team that gets to the required number of kills wins. Simple, fun. Plunder is kinda like a Capture the Flag game. But there’s only 1 flag. Well, treasure actually. You have to find the treasure on the map (it’s marked, no problem finding it) and bring it back to your base. Carrying it makes you slower, but you can throw it like a grenade (with the same button as the grenades). In the plaza map, the treasure chest you must put the treasure in is elevated, so you have to throw it up the bulding it’s in and get up there to bring it to the chest. The cooperative mode basically makes you go through part of a stage with other players. Basically that means going from gunfight to gunfight, and at the end of each section going at a spot where everyone must be to go to the next section.

Overall
The competitive modes are really fun. Plunder requires some real teamwork (which I sadly never get since I’m always teamed up with morons), but when you get the rhythm it’s really interesting. Deathmatch is a blast.

Cooperative isn’t great for some reason and I’d rather just be playing single-player. Not that it’s really bad, but it doesn’t really get me as much as the competitive modes.

Overall, this is a pretty good experience. I didn’t guess that Uncharted would work well in multiplayer, but I was surprised that it does. The maps we have in the beta work really well for both attacking from above and from the ground, always keeping you on your toes.

It probably won’t get as much attention as the single-player campaign, but it’s going to be a solid gameplay experience nonetheless.

I bought Zone of the Enders for the MGS2 demo.

I found a new series that I loved.

    @Victor
Indeed, I’m sure everyone who bought inFAMOUS for the Uncharted 2 beta found a great game in inFAMOUS to go along with the beta… Gonna review that soon too.

Speaking of Zone of the Enders… Kinda disappointed that none of the Konami games announced by Kojima was Zone of the Enders 3… It would be so awesome on PS3.
