Planetside 2 Survey

Just received an email from SOE requesting that I take part in a survey to help them churn ideas around the next Planetside game!
For years, I have hoped(and prayed) that SOE get on the ball and make a new Planetside, or at the least begin a new project with the ides behind Planetside.
If you are unfamilar with the game, Planetside is a MMOFPS with RPG elements. As far as I know, it was the first of its kind or, at the very least, the first popular one. It was amazing when I first played it. Love the huge battles, Loved teaming up with over 30 people in one outfit as hundreds of us when at each other. Sadly, in my opinion, the game fell short and became repetitive after about a year of playing.
Since then, I’ll pick it up every once and again to try it out again and still I get the same feeling of rapture, but after a few months get bored with the game, and annoyed with having to fork over the 15 bucks a month for the game. Along with these mixed feelings was the desire for a sequal.
And here is finally news of a forthcoming sequel!
Anyways, here is the detail from the email:
CALL TO ARMS! WE NEED YOUR HELP!
That’s right, you heard what we said! We plan to expand the PlanetSide® universe with another game and we need your help with the design. After all, who knows the game better than you, our customers, the people who actually play it! Don’t worry about the original PlanetSide, it isn’t going anywhere.
We want to hear your opinion and to do so we have put together a short survey. The information you provide will play a critical role into helping guide the development and direction of the next hit Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter. As a loyal player and experienced shooter fan, we value your input and look forward to hearing what you have to say.

1. Don’t let Dave G ever touch the game.. can’t stress that enough
2. Don’t force players to zerg into the next base in line using lattice that was the stupidest shit ever and turned the game into nothing but lag and boredom. Let the players decide how to play, don’t hand hold them and point them in the direction they are “supposed” to be. Independant thought, action and unpredictability is what makes online pvp games fun.
3. Make all the planets or whatever fun to fight on, everyone only fought on 3 because the terrain on the others was trash
4. Allow aircraft to be able to barrel roll..
5. Improve the game engine so it acts more like Aion’s (ie; fluid and can support 100v100 with still 80 fps)
6. Make the infantry combat more fluid like playing an fps not a clunky piece of trash, for example all suits should be able to turn faster.. that was a big point. While I’m harping on the subject, fluidity in everything needed to be improved.. directional movement and aiming was clunky and poor. If you want an example of what I mean by fluid.. BF2 and TF2 are good examples.
7. Improve servers, your servers were weak and it showed in game. Stability Stability Stability.
8. Expansions were stupid, make a solid core game and leave it alone. All that happened was more stupid. Take a note from Blizzard and edit the core game until it’s completely balanced before you start thinking expansion. Then don’t think turning it into mechwarrior is a good idea.
9. Keep the 3 teams idea, 2 teams is not enough and 3 brings a lot more fun and random action into play… also doesn’t create massive zergs in one tiny area.
10. Find the weak links in the designer team and make sure they aren’t on the sequal (Dave G)
11. Players are more concerned about gameplay, balance, objectives, game stability and fluidity over graphics. As long as the game doesn’t look like crap those should be your focus points.
12. The original vehicles were a good assortment and should definately be kept around for the sequal. (Exception TR had 3 players required for their tank which should have been 2 for obvious reasons. Well apparently not obvious enough since it needed 3 in game.)
13. Using the sniper rifle was only effective on stationary targets, it was impossible to hit moving targets.
14. Take out the ingame voice application unless the quality can be as high as ventrilo, most players use ventrilo anyway especially if that lowers performance due to bandwidth limitations
15. Make sure the game can be alt-tabbed without crashing/freezing
16. Monthly fee rate is considered too high since there’s no work compared to an RPG MMO that needs to be done such as quest updating and dungeon creation. Essentially the player is just paying to use a server service once the game is purchased off the shelf.
- Sidenote: I was a big fan of the initial release of Planetside; the factors that attracted me was the mmofps concept, the array of vehicles and infantry combat options, the openness of it all (you could take any base anywhere), the fact there were 3 teams which had different weaponry and abilities, and the profession idea.
Sounds like all good suggestions. I definitely agree with the voice option…my outfit required us to download ventrillo.
They could easily make a great MMOFPSRPG…
Allow barrel rolls, flips for aircraft!
better graphics (duh)
Performance… seemed P.S. still needs a high end computer to run so so graphics…
There is so much more! omg! Im just… loving the idea of PS2!!
No lattice?
Muppet. That’s what made it so interesting in the first place. No lattice makes it not fluid. Imagine how annying it would be, trying to cap a continent (planet) when a single claoker could spend all day hacking everything.
And thank chriist the sniper rifle was crap at moving targets. Otherwise every camping jackass like Seymour will end up sitting on a hill doing nothing constructive but kill farming. Camping killwhores.
Bring back MMO combat, where people can work together, zerg or do spec ops, but spend all day fighting in one battle that never really ends! Long live the TR!
Sounds like all good ideas…can’t wait for more information.
@Seymour
Dear Seymour,
Here is my $0.02 worth…
2. I loved to farm the zerg. I say keep it!
3. I liked the variety of terrain. Just gotta know how to tailor your game to each planet
13. Snipers. You could hit moving targets, just had to know where they were running, aim at that point….and time it up. Skill FTW.
16. Games will get made if they MAKE $$$. Gotta give the people financing the potential project a reward for their risk. Sorry, just how business works
@SepticX
Good points
