The Save Points! Game of the Year awards 2009: Best Single Player
What can make or break a game is the single player experience. A solid single player with good gameplay and an interesting story can propel any game to greatness.
This year’s choices of “Best Single Player games” all give you a solid experience.

Uncharted 2

Uncharted 2′s single player is an incredible ride. From the sweeping camera angles, witty in-game one liners and a great script, every minute of the single player will blow your mind. The vocal work of the starring characters is probably the best this generation, as is pretty much everything about this game. Multiple levels of difficulty will keep you coming back for more and the collectable treasure will have you exploring each area with a fine comb. But will you care? No, you’ll love every second. Batman: Arkham Asylum

Exploring the infamous Arkham Asylum, fighting all the crazy people in it, visiting a surprising variety of environments and the overall story of the game. Batman: Arkham Asylum is definitely something to behold. The great gameplay combined with a fun story and cool characters make this one of the best single player experiences of the year.
Demon’s Souls

Just factoring in the game’s difficulty and the overall solid gameplay, this easily goes for one of the best Single Player games of the year. For once a developer shows he’s not scared of making a tough game, but at the same time it’s the GOOD type of difficulty where it’s not cheap “okay, so here’s a thousand enemies for you to kil, all shooting at you at the same time” difficulty, but instead relies on skill and memorization on the player’s part. But what makes the single player so interesting here is that it seamlessly integrates multiplayer components in the single-player experience. Of course you have tips for what’s coming up on the ground, but you can also see how some people died near where you are so you can predict what’s gonna happen, and you can summon other players to your game to help you for the tougher parts. The flawless integration of online play in the single player experience is a big part of what makes this a great single player experience.
New Super Mario Bros Wii

It’s a Mario side-scrolling platformer. Of course it makes the list for best single player. Mario continually offers the best platforming experience on each system he gets platforming games on, and this is no exception. Nicely designed levels, fun boss battles, fast-paced precision platforming, cool power-ups… Just great. Sure, the story is exactly the same as… just about every other mario game… but what kind of weirdo plays Mario games for the story anyways?
Muramasa: The Demon Blade

Featuring a nice variation of the Castlevania/Metroid style of gameplay, a fun and relatively deep fighting system, interesting stories, great visuals and good reason to play the game multiple times through, this is definitely one of the really good single player games that came out this year.

About Demon’s souls, the part where other players invade your game is awesome too.
While I haven’t turned to invading someone yet, I’ve had a few people interfere with my game, sometimes 2 or 3 in a row, and taking down those people with my blade and spells is nothing short of satisfying, while putting you on the edge of your seat, afraid to lose all you’ve achieved since you’ve entered a level.
I need to try Demon’s Soul.
While I agree Batman was great…and really one of the best this year…I still felt letdown with how short it was…
Can’t wait for what they have in store for the sequel though.
