Games coming out in May 2012
Talk about not writing about what I said I would… mostly because I’m playing too much stuff at the same time. I’m still planning about writing about some of the things I mentioned before (and more upcoming stuff), but it may come later.
So what’s coming in May… just a couple things, not a whole lot of high-quality stuff. 1 and a half PC releases (Edit: Now 2 and a half), 2 3DS releases, 3 PS3 exclusives, 2 Vita games, somehow 2 360 releases and 7 multiplatform games, (Edit: and an NES game). Those include either games I’m interested in, or games that may or may not be popular… Well, basically anything I feel bears mentioning, whether I’m personally hyped for it or not.
So let’s see if there’s anything interesting.
*Post updated to include an extra PC game, and an extra NES game*
*Post updated again on May 14th to add a new 360 game, what?*
Awesomenauts 05/01 (PS3, 05/02 on 360)
Dota style game, but in a side-scrolling platformer setting with 2D graphics. It’s really uninteresting to me, but I’m sure people will love it. It seems really solid, it’s not just my style. And it does have the advantage of having a badass title.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 2 05/15 (PS3, 05/16 on 360)
I originally wrote about how hyped I was about this, but then I saw gameplay videos. I’m not sure anymore… it’s from a beta version, so maybe some things aren’t 100% final but… my hype went way down, there’s various things that really bother me here. Just check it out. I’m hoping the weirdness of this video (as well as the lack of challenge in others) isn’t a big problem in the final release, but yeah… I don’t know. I’m still getting this, but I’m not expecting to like it as much as Generations or Episode 1.
Battleship 05/15 (PS3, 360, 3DS, Wii)
A video game based on a movie based on an old board game… Weird… Anyways, it’s a scrappy modern military FPS with, apparently, classic Battleship gameplay elements… I’m totally renting this, just for the lulz.
Max Payne 3 05/15 (PS3, 360, 05/29 on PC)
Max Payne… It’s been a while. I… actually haven’t played the first 2 much…. I played one of them and I don’t remember if I liked it. All I really remember is “The Adventures of Captain BaseBallBat-Boy”…. So I’ll be happy if Captain BaseBallBat-Boy makes a return!
Men in Black: Alien Crisis 05/22 (PS3, 360, Wii, 3DS)
Wait what? They’re making a game and it’s coming out in less than a month and there aren’t even any videos or screenshots? What the shit? Even finding the boxart in good quality was a challenge. Okay, I’ll tell you exactly what this game will be like without seeing it: Third-person shooter. Cover-based. So it’s gonna suck like every other cover-based TPS. It’s gonna have nothing even remotely close to fun or original, and it’s gonna be a buggy mess since it’s clearly being rushed (what with it coming out in a month and not having any media AT ALL), so it’s not even going to be what most people would consider a “good” cover-based shooter.
*Correction: just before posting this I found 1 gameplay screenshot… and 3 other images that showed enemy models… and GUESS WHAT! It’s a cover-based TPS!*
Dragon’s Dogma 05/22 (PS3, 360)
Looks lame, that is all.
I was right, the demo was TERRIBLE. Mashing buttons has never been this boring. Oh, you CAN not mash buttons, but it doesn’t work as well as mashing buttons. Screw this game
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier 05/22 (PS3, 360, PC in June)
I’ve only seen one piece of video footage, probably from E3… It looked kinda lame, it seemed more intent on delivering a cinematic experience than a game, but maybe it was just that particular part. I’ve never played Ghost Recon, so I’m not interested.
Some online action MMORPG I have no interest in! Dave tells me it’s pretty good though.
Diablo III 05/15
WHOAMG IT’S COMING OUT! YEAAAAAAAAH… Okay, so I played the beta and it seems really solid. BUT you won’t like it as much as Diablo 2, I 100% guarantee it. Mostly because it’s actually really different from Diablo 2. For one you can’t customize your stats, or even your skills. You can pick whichever skill with whichever rune you want as soon as you unlock them (and change them whenever you want), so there’s really nothing differentiating your character from any other of the same class… Other than loot. But in the end the game is fun to play so… I’m sure people will love it anyway, but you have to come in with very different expectations than Diablo 2, it’s really not the same thing.
The Binding of Isaac: Wrath of the Lamb expansion pack Late may
I loved The Binding of Isaac. So much in fact that it was one of the winners in our GotY posts for 2011 in the downloadable games category. I have no idea what’s coming in the expansion, but I’m getting it. It’s just 3$ so whatever.
PLAYSTATION 3 RELEASES
New PS3 online shooter! There’s really nothing else to say here. It does seem mildly interesting with some strategy/building elements, but otherwise the basic gameplay seems fairly meh.
Atelier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland 05/22
They’re releasing a lot of those Atelier games this generation, pretty surprising. I haven’t really sat down with any of the Atelier games this gen (other than Atelier Annie which was pretty different), so maybe I’ll check this one out.
(not sure if this is the right boxart)
Wait, this is actually coming? Huh… Well, all I’ve seen of this game was basically a tech demo when it was announced at E3, and it looked kinda sucky. It seemed to have potential though, so maybe it won’t end up being terrible. The problem is, well, it’s Move-controlled, so about 4 people can play it.
Mario Tennis Open 05/20
I was excited for this. And then I read that they’re not including an RPG mode here… Why? The RPG mode is what made the handheld Mario Tennis games as good as their console counterparts. Removing that is just making a subpar Mario Tennis game, since multiplayer doesn’t work as well on handhelds as playing on a console. Sure, it’s probably gonna be good… but removing the main attraction is rather disappointing.
RollerCoaster Tycoon 3D 05/22
Apparently this is a 3DS port of RollerCoaster Tycoon 3… I haven’t played that one so I have no idea if it was any good.
Mortal Kombat 05/02
It sucked on consoles, it’s gonna be just as bad on Vita.
Resistance: Burning Skies 05/29
Generic boring FPS, w00! At least it’s finally something for the Vita to get some sales from… maybe.
XBOX 360 RELEASES
Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition 05/09
What, wasn’t this out? It was supposed to come out last year in November… Guess they forgot?
Akai Katana Shin 05/15
Well that’s a surprise, I learned 2 day before release this was coming out. A side-scrolling shooter by Cave, pretty sure to be mildly bullet-hell-ish and really fun. w00!
Nomolos: Storming the Catsle 05/15
A new side-scrolling platformer on NES! This is made by Gradual Games, and it seems pretty solid. You’ll be able to buy it from retrousb.com, or pre-order it right now from Gradual Games’ website. If you pre-order from their website, you’ll get a grey cartridge (with the option of getting it complete in box), or you get a blue cartridge if you order from retrousb.com when it pops out there.
