Games coming out in July 2012
And now the slow time of the year. July is usually very light on releases, one of the lightest months of the year except maybe for December, and this July is no exception other than for the 3DS.
We’re still getting some stuff. The 3DS has a staggering 4 releases, the Wii has a release, the PSP has a release, PSN and XBLA are getting something (I’m not sure when Jet Set Radio HD is supposed to come so I haven’t included it), and the NES is pretty likely to get something too. And it’s pretty much quality all-around.
Those include either games I’m interested in, or games that may be/become popular… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning, whether I’m personally hyped for it or not. No shovelware here.
Let’s Go!
NES RELEASE
Battle Kid 2: Mountain of Torment

There’s no specific release date for this, but the game is done and just about ready to be released… Originally June was the aimed release period, but it seems that it was pushed back a bit. I’ll just keep this on every release list until it comes out… but it seems like it should be out in either July or early August, you’ll be able to buy it at retrousb.com, either cart+manual for 35$ or a CIB version+small art book for 7$ more.
The original Battle Kid was a super fun and super tough-as-nails NES game, and this seems to basically follow the same formula. There are a few gameplay additions too, so it should be pretty interesting.
3DS RELEASES
Theatrhythm Final Fantasy 07/03

A rhythm game with RPG elements and some of the best music in the history of gaming… Why not? Looks pretty fun to me.
Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure 07/10

Pretty sure this was on a list or 2 before, not sure why it’s not out yet… But here it is. Another rhythm game, but doesn’t seem really that great from what I’ve seen… though it is made by the guys who made Space Channel 5 so it might be really good, and maybe the parts I saw were the lamer parts, who knows.
Heroes of Ruin 07/17

A Diablo-style hack n’ slash RPG. I have a friend in Europe who played the demo and told me it was pretty fun, and that there were some interesting ideas here. I’m not terribly interested, but it seems potentially nice. I also heard that it’s rather short, though that might be fine with a handheld game, we’ll see.
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance 07/31

Oh look another handheld KH spin-off. The last one on DS, Re:coded I think, was pretty decent, but overall I just think fans want to finally see the third game. I feel like this is a bit of a waste since they’ve all basically been using the same gameplay as the first game and that’s still pretty much the case here… BUT playing the demo did convince me that it was a least trying, with a couple new gameplay elements.
Wii RELEASE
The Last Story 07/31

Operation Rainfall game number 2! I know nothing of this one frankly, but it’s pretty much the Wii’s final big game (unless Pandora’s Tower ends up coming out, but I doubt it)… That’s pretty weird to say when the 360 and PS3 still have so many games lined up.
MULTIPLATFORM RELEASE
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD July (PSN, XBLA)

I thought this was gonna be a June release, but it turns out it’s a July release. To re-iterate, I’m pretty interested since I really enjoy the first few THPS games… You know, before Activision completely destroyed the franchise. This is supposed to include levels and gameplay from the first 2 games in the series, as well as music from those.
PSP RELEASE
Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time 07/31

I know nothing about this series really, but I know a lot of people wanted to see this game over here. It seems like a weird turn-based RPG where characters move around the battlefield during battle. Could be interesting.
