Games coming out in August 2012
OH hey, I’m forgetting to post this, I’ll do that right now. So releases of August… a few cool things here.
We’ve got… the same NES release as last month but maybe it’ll actually come out, 2 3DS games (and a 3DS version), 2 PS3 exclusives, 1 Wii exclusive and 6 multiplatform games.
Those include either games I’m interested in, or games that may be/become popular… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning, whether I’m personally hyped for it or not. No shovelware here… Other than Madden.
Let’s Go!
NES RELEASE
Battle Kid 2: Mountain of Torment

*copy-paste* There’s no specific release date for this, but the game is done and just about ready to be released… Originally June was the aimed release period, but it seems that it was pushed back a bit. I’ll just keep this on every release list until it comes out… but it seems like it should be out in August, you’ll be able to buy it at retrousb.com, either cart+manual for 35$ or a CIB version+small art book for 7$ more.
The original Battle Kid was a super fun and super tough-as-nails NES game, and this seems to basically follow the same formula. There are a few gameplay additions too, so it should be pretty interesting.
3DS RELEASES
3DS XL 08/19

New 3DS with bigger screen. Nothing more to say really. I think it’s way too early to release that, they should have waited until next year. Oh and if you’re in Japan you’re not even getting a charger with it… Cost-cutting measures? The chargers barely cost anything to produce, they’re not even saving a dollar per unit.
New Super Mario Bros. 2 08/19

Oh hey, a new Mario game that’s pretty sure to be fun! Not sure about this “it’s all about the gold” concept, beyond it really just being Nintendo “subtly” bragging that this game will make them lots of money… But whatever, the game looks fun to play.
Just a quick “rant” here… Not sure how I feel about them re-using the “New” sub-series. I hope this doesn’t become Nintendo’s CoD (there ARE 2 “New” Mario games coming out this year you know…). Mario has been know, at least in regards to the main series, as a series that does major changes between iterations other than the japanese Mario 2 and Galaxy 2 (both of which still felt different from their precursor due to minor shifts in gameplay and level design philosophy), but the “New” sub-series is, currently, basically very much the same all the way through, and it looks a bit bland compared to other Mario outings. Yes it’s gonna be fun, yes it could get really repetitive if they make any more of these. I know it’s only one per system right now, and I really hope it stays that way. I don’t want to see Nintendo milking this dryer than it already is.
RollerCoaster Tycoon 3D 08/28

Thought this was out already, what’s with games getting delayed right under my nose? Well, this is coming in August now. It’s a port of RCT3, which I never played… I actually stopped playing that series at 1, and I doubt that will change for a while.
PLAYSTATION 3 RELEASES
Legasista 08/21

A downloadable rogue-like RPG developed by Nippon Ichi… They might as well just take money straight from my wallet…. Okay, in all honesty it does look really fun to play, so why not?
Ratchet and Clank Collection 08/28

Hey look an HD collection… I’d rant about how pointless these are… but I won’t, that’s for another time, especially since I already have a mini-rant up there.
WII RELEASE
The Last Story 08/14

Oh, hey, that game that got delayed… Not one I’m looking forward to much, but it is an RPG on the Wii, and a lot of people have been wanting it because of Operation Rainfall. Oh and people who have played it have said that it’s pretty average… Yeah.
PC RELEASES
Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition 08/24

Dark Souls is a pretty good game, with reasonable challenge especially compared to most other modern games… And now it’s coming to PC with extra DLC (which I’m pretty sure is also coming to the other systems). Yay?
Guild Wars 2 08/28

I’m not interested. But Dave has been telling me that the game is really good and fun to play and isn’t just another bad WoW clone. So it’s a probably solid MMORPG with no monthly fees… sounds like a winner.
MULTIPLATFORM RELEASES
Persona 4 Arena 08/07 (PS3, 360)

The little I’ve seen of this makes me think it should be pretty good. Hey, it’s made by the guys who made Guilty Gear and BlazBlue after all! It looks fun to play, despite the pretty simplistic-looking controls.
Darksiders II 08/14 (PC, 360, PS3)

The first Darksiders was pretty cool. Basically Zelda (but not as good) mixed with Devil May Cry (but not as good), building a pretty solid gameplay experience overall. Not exactly hyped for this one, but I’ll still be checking it out at one point.
Sleeping Dogs 08/14 (PC, 360, PS3)

I haven’t seen much of this… Seems like an open-world GTA-ish game set in China. I’m not particularly interested. It does seem to have some cool ideas… but I doubt I’ll do more than give it a rental.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive 08/21 (PC, 360, PS3)

Whoa, new Counter-Strike! Impressions I’ve heard said that it’s pretty much identical to the original gameplay-wise, which is really not a problem here. I’m just not really interested, I was never big on the original (though I did enjoy it the few times I played it), mostly because I was more into the gameplay style of Unreal Tournament. Should be good though.
Madden NFL 13 08/28 (Wii, Vita, 360, PC, PS3)

EA Sports takes a couple hours to shoot a new cover photo, upgrade the rosters, and gets tons of money as a result. It’s the unbreakable cycle of the gaming industry.
Transformers: Fall of Cybertron 08/28 (PC, 360, PS3)

I thought War for Cybertron was a decent game. Not great, but definitely not the worst TPS out there, it had its moments and I had fun with it. This one seems pretty similar, but they do seem to have mildly improved certain aspects, especially the pacing. I’ll probably be checking it out.
