Games coming out in October 2012

September 24th, 2012 Leave a comment Go to comments

Well, tons of releases this month! The season of big releases is finally actually starting. Not really a whole lot I’m personally interested in buying, but a lot of stuff nonetheless.

So in October were’s getting: 13 multiplatform games, 4 3DS games, 1/2 DS games, 6 Vita releases (whoa!), 2 PS3 exclusives and 2 Xbox 360 exclusives. Again ignoring Battle Kid 2 which should have been out quite a while ago.

Usual disclaimer: Those include either games I’m interested in, or games that may be/become popular… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning, whether I’m personally hyped for it or not. No “shovelware” here.

Let’s Go!

Resident Evil 6 10/02 (PS3, 360)

Capcom fucking up Resident Evil, what a surprise! Even the part that people are calling “survival horror” (Leon’s campaign) doesn’t even have survival horror elements, and Chris’ campaign is just plain Call of Duty. Bad.

Spy Hunter 10/09 for Vita, 10/23 for 3DS

A new Spy Hunter? Unexpected. Well, you’re a transformable car, going around shooting other cars. Looks like it could be fun, but it’s a rental for me.

Dishonored 10/09 (PC, PS3, 360)

This looks really cool. First-person assassination game, where you can handle every assassination in any way you want, with a variety of powers you can use to kill or sneak around… Let’s hope that the recent news of the game getting streamlined (I.E. it tells you what to do because apparently people are too dumb to experiment) doesn’t ruin what is a great idea.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown 10/09 (PC, PS3, 360)

So this is not that first-person shooter shit that… I have no idea if it actually still exists. Rather, it’s a strategy game like the previous games in the series. It seems like it could be fun, I’ll rent it for sure.

Worms Revolution 10/10 (PC, PS3, 360)

A new Worms game! Looks really cool too. New weapons, and character classes which could be really fun… I’m pretty interested in trying it out.

Doom 3 BFG Edition 10/16 (PC, PS3, 360)

Another HD edition! Meh. I mean, nothing against Doom 3, but I hate the idea of everything getting HD versions. It’s just a waste of resources.

Skylanders Giants 10/21 (PS3, Wii, 360, 3DS, Wii U version at Wii U launch)

Skylanders! But now they’re bigger! I haven’t played the first game, but I thought the basic idea was really imaginative and fun. Just not something I feel like wasting money on.

Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward 10/23 (3DS, Vita)

OH, a spiritual sequel to 999 from the DS, that’s cool. Basically, visual novel+adventure game with some puzzles and a really good story, it’s quite interesting. Should be fun. Oh and you get one of the watches featured in the game if you pre-order, fun.

Medal of Honor: Warfighter 10/23 (PC, PS3, 360)

Call of Duty competitor! Lame.

LEGO Lord of the Rings 10/30 (everything)

I have no idea what this is gonna be like, partly because I haven’t really played any of the LEGO series other than the first LEGO Batman. Could be fun though, people really seem to enjoy these.

Assassin’s Creed III 10/30 (PS3, 360, later on PC)

Yearly boring game that plays itself! Why do people like this series again? Is it the insanely stupid story, the personality-lacking characters, or the nearly automatic gameplay? I don’t get it.

Need for Speed Most Wanted 10/30 (PC, PS3, 360, Vita)

Hey, a Need for Speed game made by Criterion! I wonder if it’s just gonna be a Burnout game with the Need for Speed license tacked on! *watches a trailer* Yup, it is. Could be cool either way, love me some Burnout.

Zone of the Enders HD Collection 10/30 (PS3, 360)

Another HD collection! Again! At least it’s for something cool, but I’m not interested… I already have the first 2 on PS2, and the Metal Gear Rising demo (as awesomely badass as that game looks) isn’t enough to sway me… ZOE2 is awesome though, if you never played it BUY THIS.

Pokemon Black 2/White 2 10/07

The first direct sequel in the Pokemon series! Not much to say here, it’s Pokemon and it’s gonna be good. Oh, and apparently there are special 3DS features.

Code of Princess 10/09

A beat ’em up RPG made by some of the people who made Guardian Heroes! Sounds really cool, but I did hear bad things about this from people who played the japanese version… Rental it is.

Roller Coaster Tycoon 3D 10/16

This is, like, the fourth time I put this here… Nothing more to say than before.

Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?! 10/23

Never saw this show, so I have no idea what it’s about… though it is pretty popular apparently. That said, the game looks similar to Zelda 2, maybe a bit slower. Looks like it could be fun, I’ll probably end up checking it out. (there might be a DS version too, I don’t care)

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask 10/28

Professor Layton! Quite like those games. Very simple casual puzzle game with some adventure game elements and cool stories. I might get this eventually.

New Little King’s Story 10/02 (on PSN)

An enhanced port of a Wii game! Not one that I’ve played though (neither did that many people since it was a pretty niche game), so it could be interesting to check out.

Ragnarok Odyssey 10/16

This seems potentially interesting. Based on the Ragnarok Online universe, but this time it’s an action RPG in the veins of Phantasy Star Online (it seems). Finally a potentially interesting exclusive for the Vita… that no one will care about! Oh well.

Silent Hill: Book of Memories 10/16

Take Silent Hill. Remove the “Silent Hill”-ness of it, and make it into a Diablo-style hack and slash that… doesn’t seem really solid. Meh.

Street Fighter X Tekken 10/23

This is an okay fighting game… Yeah, I never reviewed it, but I do think it’s fun. Still, the Vita version seems okay and it does include all the overpriced DLC characters.

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Splitz 10/23

Monkey Ball game! Those are generally fun… Not much more to say here.

Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation 10/30

Hey look, Assassin’s Creed 3 again! Same auto-gameplay, same graphics, the only differences are the playable character which looks different but plays the same, and the plot.

Mugen Souls 10/16

A fun-looking RPG published by NISA. It involves chibi anime characters and a really fun-looking battle system where you kick enemies around like balls on a pool table. These random NISA-published RPGs are frequently pretty good, but nothing really special, or a bit too similar. I hope this does a little bit more.

Okami HD

Another HD thingy! Whatever.

Fable: The Journey 10/09

Hey, the only thing Kinect is okay-ish for! An on-rails shooter, and a lame-looking one at that! Is ANYONE excited for this crappy-looking game? I have no idea why people would play an on-rails shooter on 360 rather than Wii or PS3, frankly.

Forza Horizon 10/23

A downgraded Forza game! There isn’t even any tuning. Meh.

I don’t know how I feel about classes in Worms.

Purchased Adventure Time and Assassin’s Creed 3 already. I want Dishonored as well.

Again, I’d like to state that AC can have as much complexity as you’re willing to give it. Much like any game you can chose to learn to play it or just cruise through it. It all depends on how much you’re invested in the game itself… again, much like any other game these past few generations (regardless of genre). I skipped 2 and Brotherhood and Going from 1 to Revolution was eye opening to me. They add new elements every time and from what I saw. The Naval combat looks awesome. I thought the tower defense in Revolution was rather neat. I wasn’t very good at it though. It is clear that Ubisoft spends a great deal of TLC on this series.

Side note on AC series, I think that whenever they introduced their multi (I’m not sure which version) it probably suffered from the whole IT MUST HAVE MULTI TO SUCCEED mentality. I played a great deal of it in Revolution, it must have been fleshed out or refined by then because I found it surprisingly fun to try and hide from other players and pretend to be an NPC only to surprise them in the end.

Actually I forgot about the multiplayer in that game, even though it’s actually my favorite part in it. I think it’s really the only place where the standard AC gameplay really works (since, in a single-player setting, it just plays itself). Despite, as you said, being made due to the “IT MUST HAVE MULTI TO SUCCEED” mentality, it still manages to be the only part of the series I can really get behind… Which isn’t something I thought I’d say 😛
