Games coming out in April 2017
March was quite the month for me. My dad got cancer surgery (he’s doing good), work being weird, Switch, a bunch of posts, too much Power Rangers, Switch, Nier, probably other games… It feels like this month lasted a year. But we’re right at the end and it’s time to talk about next month!
The count in April: 17 multiplats, a Switch release, 2 PS4 releases and a PC release. There’s a good number of interesting releases this month. I’m grabbing quite a few things.
So let’s talk about it!
Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning. Probably missing stuff because game companies are shit about announcing release dates nowadays (and good at delaying games near release). Indies in particular are kinda random, or bad at making their games known (I get that it’s hard, but if I don’t see anything about your game before it comes out, I can’t very much highlight it). So if there’s no indie games here, it’s pretty normal. I won’t spend hours that I could be playing games watching videos for indie games I have no immediate interest in.
Persona 5 04/04 (PS3, PS4)
This was delayed a lot I feel (I’ve had it pre-ordered back in 2014 on PS3… I have since switch my pre-order to the PS4 version), happy to finally see it coming out. Kinda sad it’s not getting a Switch release (at least yet), since Persona works out really well on handheld. That said, it’s actually been a long time since the last Persona game (P4 came out 9 years ago), so that’s nice, and visually this just looks really cool. I’m avoiding seeing anything about this story or gameplay-wise, like most games I’m interested in recently. Hope it’s good, and a bit more RPG-ish than Persona 4’s dating/life simulator stuff (which was fine, but not really what I usually want from my RPGs).
Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition 04/07 (PC, PS4, Xbone)
BUY THIS GAME. The original release of this hasn’t sold a whole lot (took several years to barely surpass the million sold mark), and is nearly never talked about. An example of a game that doesn’t JUST do what other games in the genre do, while being an extremely fun and well-designed experience. There’s few FPS that are even close to being this fun. Plus this version has Duke Nukem as a playable character with his own newly-written script. Fuck yeah.
Yooka-Laylee 04/11 (PC, PS4, Xbone (Switch release later))
So this is a bunch of older Rare employees from back when Rare was relevant and not lame, making a game that fits right in with what they did back then (under the name Playtonic). The comparisons to Banjo-Kazooie are obvious, though hearing from people who have played it it’s also pretty comparable to Mario 64. Either way, it looks awesome and I can’t wait to play it. I hope it’s another Kickstarter success at the level of Shovel Knight. On my side there’s a large part of my hype that’s about Grant Kirkhope and David Wise making Banjo-Kazooie-ish music again.
A Rose in the Twilight 04/11 (PC, Vita)
Some side-scrolling adventure/puzzle game. Looks okay, it’s being released by NISA so that’s basically the only reason I know about it.
Cosmic Star Heroine 04/11 (PC, PS4)
I backed this on Kickstarter. I don’t really remember why, or what it really is. It’s from Zeboyd games, who made Breath of Death VII and Cthulhu Saves the World (simple Dragon Quest style RPGs, but much easier and more linear). I hope it’s a bit deeper than those, which were fun but too easy.
Shiness: The Lightning Kingdom 04/18 (PC for sure, I don’t know about the PS4 and Xbone versions)
I just heard about this one, but it looks pretty cool. An Action-RPG with anthropomorphic animals. Not sure what the gameplay is like specifically (a quick look makes it seem like it has fighting game elements to it), but visually it looks quite nice. I’ll check some reviews eventually.
Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap 04/18 (Switch, PS4, Xbone)
This is a remake of a classic game, Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon’s Trap. The Wonder Boy series is a weird one (the makers sold the engine of the original, which spawned Adventure Island, then the 2 series that started off with literally the exact same gameplay diverged into their own paths, Adventure Island just keeping it up while Wonder Boy changed into a more side-scrolling action-RPG style), and this is one of the games in the series I’ve always been interested in. In this one the character gets transformed into a small dragon (that can change to different animals), and has to end the curse.
And it’s not the only Dragon’s Trap remake/inspired game coming out this year, which is very odd, but hey I won’t complain.
The Disney Afternoon Collection 04/18 (PC, PS4, Xbone)
5 classic Nintendo games, and also Talespin is there so that’s… a thing. No idea why there’s no Switch release for this pack, seems like a no-brainer. But yeah, both DuckTales, both Rescue Rangers and Darkwing Duck are all great games. This adds speedrunning features (including an optional stream layout for each game which is a really cool addition), as well as a rewind feature if you fuck up which I find kinda odd. Very cool.
Full Throttle Remastered 04/18 (PC, Vita, PS4)
Full Throttle is a fairly classic point-and-click adventure game. I didn’t even know they were remastering it. I’ll add it to the list of remastered point-and-click games I want to get but never will.
Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 04/25 (PC, Wii U, PS4, Xbone)
I know nothing of this series. I figured Sniper Elite was where it was for stealth sniper games, so I never paid attention. (Final Wii U release?)
Dragon Quest Heroes II 04/25 (PC, PS4)
Dragon Quest Heroes is my favorite “Dynasty Warriors” game, by far. This is more of what I liked from the first one, from what I can see. More characters I like and I feel there’s gonna be a bit more to it. Cannot wait to get this… but I will, because the Switch is getting a pack with both games in Japan, and hopefully that comes out here. Please Squeenix be nice. And patch it to not have framerate issues, kthx.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 04/25 (Switch, PS4)
I don’t know how a game can combine Puyo Puyo and Tetris, but I’m interested in checking it out. This was out in Japan on multiple platforms before, good to see it come here. Plus if you pre-order the Switch version you get Puyo and Tetromino keychains. W00t! (note: why no Vita? It’s out on it in Japan)
Outlast 2 04/25 (PC, PS4, Xbone)
One of them “run away from things” horror games. I saw a bit of the first game, looked okay. I don’t particularly care though. Expect the usual suspects making let’s plays of this where they exaggerate their screaming to make the kiddies laugh.
Lock’s Quest 04/25 (PC, PS4, Xbone)
I barely remember this. It was a DS game. I think it was kinda good? I think it was some kinda tower defense… action-rpg… thing? I know I played it, I just don’t remember a thing about it. It’s getting an HD remake now. Yay?
Little Nightmares 04/28 (PC, PS4, Xbone)
This really reminds me of Limbo. It’s a weird platformer, seemingly with puzzle elements, with some crazy visuals and lots of big things trying to kill you. I’m not too interested myself, but I think it could become fairly popular.
LEGO City Undercover 04/30 (Switch, PS4, Xbone, PC)
This “previously Wii U exclusive” is coming out to other stuff. I played it on Wii U, it’s a pretty bad game. It feels like people just freaked out over this game because, at the time, the Wii U had basically nothing but New Super Mario Bros U (a lot of games were being delayed around that time). Kinda like people freaking out over Meteos on the original DS back when it didn’t have much to play (people tend to forget the DS took a while to become a success, it wasn’t much of one until the DS Lite and NSMB).
Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment Not sure about release date, don’t care (PC, Wii U, 3DS, Vita, PS4, Xbone)
This has been out on Switch and it’s pretty solid. Not the best Shovel Knight campaign, I’d put it below the other 2 so far, but it’s fun (outside of the auto-scrollers). If you don’t have Shovel Knight already you’re missing out on one of the better games to come out in the last few years and 2 expansions that are quite good. Buy this. (I might post my impressions of it soon, we’ll see)
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 04/28
It’s Mario Kart 8, which is an awesome game, with all the DLC included, plus the 2 items mechanic from Double Dash and a proper battle mode (actually multiple battle modes) and new characters. Plus better graphics and performance with the 1080p and 60fps in 1 and 2 player modes (sadly not in 3-4 player where it goes down to 30fps unlike early reports). If you don’t have this game already you’re doing yourself a great disservice… and that’s your chance to grab a better version of it. There’s a reason more than half of Wii U owners have this game (the attach rate of this one is absolutely insane), and I wouldn’t be surprised if this version got a similar attach rate.
Drawn to Death 04/04
Third-Person online shooter. It’s a David Jaffe game (he’s been very hit-or-miss overall). It has really cool visuals, and it looks really fun. Each character has really different skills and movement options and weapons and stuff (6 characters at launch, no idea if there’s DLC plans). The level designs have some really cool aspects too. However the PS4 requires PS+ to play online, so fuck this (that does mean the game is basically free as long as you have a PS+ subscription in April as it’s one of the free PS+ game that month).
PaRappa the Rapper 04/04
I think I had that on last month’s list, because that’s the date Sony had on their own website at the time. Not sure what happened there. Just another game company being unclear about release dates and slow at announcing delays I guess? I don’t get why this keeps happening.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III 04/27
I’m very not familiar with the Dawn of War series. What I saw of this game looked pretty cool though. If I was more into RTS I’d probably check it out.
