Games coming out in July 2017

The summer is starting. Usually not a big time for game releases, however there’s a few things this month, including a few actually-big releases. It’s gonna be a quieter month for me after the rush that was E3.

So this month we’ve got: 3 Switch games, a PC release, 7 multiplats, 2 PS4 games and 3 3DS games.

Let’s go!

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning for any reason. Probably missing stuff because game companies are shit about announcing release dates nowadays (and good at delaying games near release), indies especially. So if there’s no/few indie games here, it’s pretty normal.

*EDIT JUNE 30: I added a game*

Splatoon 2 07/21
Splatoon 2

Splatoon wasn’t just a GOTY contender for me, but actually the winner for 2015, and I’m hyped for the sequel. It has a deeper story mode (that’s actually influenced by multiplayer-based events in the first game), a new weapon type, all the super weapons are new (so far), new modes and new levels or old levels with new changes.
Plus they’re still doing the free content updates thing which is awesome.
Thankfully we have until 2018 before we need to pay extra to play this online. So get this ASAP.

Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star 07/25
Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star

I never realized this was a Warriors game when it came out on other platforms. Huh. Well, not like I’d grab this if I wanted a Warriors game on Switch, since there’s different more interesting ones coming out later (please Squeenix localize DQH2 on Switch). But if you’re a Fate fan it’s probably good.

Namco Museum 07/28

This is a small collection of classic arcade games by Namco. The highlights, IMO, are Tower of Druaga and Splatterhouse. I hear cool things about Pac-Man VS as well. It’s a pretty tiny collection though, only 11 games. Several games with similar titles on other systems have had more games.

The End is Nigh 07/12
The End is Nigh

New game by the Super Meat Boy and Binding of Isaac dev. Nice. It’s a platformer where it seems like you’ll die a lot. Seems good to me. Looks like there’s a bit more depth to it than Super Meat Boy, it seems like a big continuous world, each screen being a level, and there’s 600 levels. Coming to Switch and maybe other platforms later too, but I believe the original release is on PC only.

Accel World VS. Sword Art Online 07/07 (Vita, PS4)

Huh. Both animes were okay, I guess. SAO got pretty dumb and even people who like it (like me) can go on hours-long monologues about what’s bad about it, while Accel World was interesting but a bit weird. I don’t exactly get how they crossover though, and I don’t care.

Fable Fortune 07/07 (PC, Xbone)

Card game based on Fable. I assume it’ll do even worse than the card game based on Elder Scrolls.

Minecraft: Story Mode – Season Two: The Telltale Series 7/11 (PC, PS4, Xbone?)
Minecraft: Story Mode - Season Two: The Telltale Series

Pyre 07/25 (PC, PS4)
This is the Bastion and Transistor people, so the game is interesting on that alone. It looks like it has a pretty cool and unique combat system. I’m pretty excited to get this eventually.

Fallen Legion 07/25 (Vita, PS4)
Fallen Legion
It seems like this is actually different games depending on if you get the PS4 or Vita version. The PS4 version is subtitled Sins of an Empire, while the Vita version is subtitled Flames of Rebellion… Difference being they’re different stories, and the PS4 version’s story features a waifu.

Fortnite 07/25 (PC, PS4, Xbone)
One of them survival game things, but you build stuff and it’s team based. It doesn’t look terribly noteworthy IMO.

Super Cloudbuilt 07/25 (PC, PS4) 07/28 (Xbone)
Super Cloudbuilt
3D platformer with cel-shaded graphics and parkour-based gameplay and a jetpack and guns. It looks legitimately fun and I never heard about it until today.

That’s You! 07/04
That’s You!

A smartphone-requiring party game… just get any one of the Jackbox packs instead, I dunno.

FINAL FANTASY XII: The Zodiac Age 07/11

It really annoys me that this is, currently, a PS4-only remaster. Why is it not on Vita, or Switch? Seriously I’d be very happy to play this on a portable console rather than on a TV. I always find RPGs better to play on handhelds. Anyways, it’s FF12, you probably already know if you like this one. If you haven’t played it yet, it’s pretty good. Vaan sucks though.

Kirby’s Blowout Blast 07/06
Kirby's Blowout Blast
A 3D platforming Kirby game. It looks pretty boring actually. And that’s kinda sad because it has some ideas that are interesting to me, but it seems so slow. It’s all about eating enemies and shooting them at other enemies to maximize points, but it’s really slow and there doesn’t seem to be much happening.

Hey! Pikmin 07/28
Hey! Pikmin

This looks like a pretty terrible game. Saw footage of the demo, it just looks like it has no design at all. Hey Nintendo, when people said they wanted portable Pikmin, they meant portable Pikmin, not “weird slow side-scrolling thing with barely a shadow of Pikmin gameplay elements and lots of passive waiting”. Pikmin 4 on Switch is what people want. So make that. Fuck this game.

Miitopia 07/28

An RPG with Miis and Tomodachi Life features. Looks like it might have some cool ideas. However, from everything I’ve seen of it, it just looks annoying to play and seems to require lots of 3DS friends to populate your world with anyways. So whatever.
