Games coming out in August 2017

Halfway through the summer, there’s not a LOT to talk about. That said, I do have a few posts to make eventually when I have time to write them.

So August… A surprising amount of releases, but not much I find particularly noteworthy. There are a few quite cool things here though that I’m really excited for. We’ve got: 20 multiplats, a Switch release, 6 PS4 releases and a PC release.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning for any reason. Probably missing stuff because game companies are shit about announcing release dates nowadays (and good at delaying games near release), indies especially. So if there’s no/few indie games here, it’s pretty normal.

Edit: added a multiplat game on July 27
Edit2: removed a Vita game on August 2, moved to next month

Ark: Survival Evolved 08/08 (PC, PS4, Xbone)

One of them multiplayer online survival games that just looks bafflingly boring to me. Hey this one has dinosaurs… okay. Also I thought it was out YEARS ago, I guess that was early access or something.

Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 08/08 (PC, PS4, Xbone)

I mean, this is cool and all, but why isn’t it on Switch? Or are they hoping to release a Legacy Collection 1+2 on Switch? Because the Switch would be the best platform for this kind of release. Anyways, this includes MM7, 8, 9 and 10. 9 is the obvious standout here, it’s badass. The rest are okay games, not really highlights of the series, except for the voice acting in 8. That’s pretty magical.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice 08/08 (PC, PS4)

Ninja Theory sucks balls. Heavenly Sword is probably their best game and it’s not even good. DmC was an insult to the series and not a good game on its own merits, rife with horrible game design choices that clashed with each other. Enslaved was just boring as fuck. The trailer for this one looks even more boring. Maybe it’s not a good representation of the game, who knows, but I’m not touching this. At least it’s half the price of normal game releases.

LawBreakers 08/08 (PC, PS4)

So fun thing about this one. A dev said this wasn’t coming out on Switch because “the controller doesn’t have enough buttons”. Yet it has exactly the same amount of buttons as the PS4. So how does he explain the PS4 version? Either way, not sure why you’d want to play an FPS on a console. This one looks kinda cool. A team-based FPS, with several characters with different skills, but it seems less role-oriented than Overwatch. I don’t know if I really care though. There were betas I got access to but forgot to play, whoops.

Batman: The Enemy Within 08/08 (PC, PS4, Xbone)

Another Telltale Batman game. Okay.

Sonic Mania 08/15 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone)

Fuck yes! This is what Sonic fans have been asking Sega to do since the Saturn. It looks so good (though I’ve been avoiding most trailers). It goes back to the Genesis style of Sonic games, which are generally considered the best, if not the only good, Sonic games. Apparently it has more levels than the average Sonic game on Genesis, so that’s cool. Very excited to get this.

Night Trap: 25th Anniversary Edition 08/15 (PC, PS4)

Physical pre-orders of the PS4 version on August 11.
So Night Trap. It’s an absolutely classic game. For all the wrong reasons of course, but classic nonetheless. It’s an FMV game with pretty baffling gameplay. You switch between different cameras in a house, you can activate traps to capture monsters that are trying to attack the people in the house. But you have to pay attention to the characters, because sometimes they’ll mention a code color, which changes what color you need to be set on to activate the traps. Plus there’s several endings. It’s a really weird game, it’s not very fun, but it has this charm that can’t be replicated. In 1992 this was sort of a pitch to what the future of gaming would be. It’s probably one of the best examples of the FMV “genre”, most other games of the style are, surprisingly, much worse.

Agents of Mayhem 08/15 (PC, PS4, Xbone)

This is from the Saint’s Row guys. It seems less over-the-top than recent Saint’s Row games, though still in the same style. There’s several playable characters, some that you unlock as you play, with different skills. The few gameplay videos I’ve watched have been pretty slow and had almost nothing happening though. It seems fun enough when there’s stuff happening… but I dunno, I’d just go with Saint’s Row 4.

Nidhogg 2 08/15 (PC, PS4, Xbone)

Didn’t play the first one. This one has a new visual style, but it seems very similar otherwise. Single-hit kills against enemies if you hit them with a weapon (with closer-range weaponless kills possible), try to run to the end of the level and get eaten by a dragon to win (I still don’t get that). Opponent respawns almost right away in front of you, so you have a constant obstacle to the goal, and if you die then it’s the opponent’s turn to run towards his goal. This one seems to have more variety to its level design, and more weapons. Looks fun.

Summon Night 6: Lost Borders 08/15 (Vita, PS4)
Summon Night 6: Lost Borders
Some strategy-RPG of sorts. I’m not familiar with this series so there’s not much I can say about it.

The Escapists 2 08/22 (PC, PS4, Xbone)

I haven’t played the first one, but I’ve heard good things. Seems like a top-down game where you strategize to escape prison. I assume there’s custom maps and stuff.

White Day: A Labyrinth Named School 08/22 (PC, PS4)

Some horror game, it’s from Korea. It looks pretty nifty. It’s apparently a remake of a game from 2001, and this would be a remaster of the 2015 phone version. Huh.

F1 2017 08/25 (PC, PS4, Xbone) (can’t find a decent image of the box, and also don’t give a shit enough to search for more than 5 seconds)
Do these even sell?

Madden NFL 18 08/25 (PS4, Xbone)

One Piece: Unlimited World Red Deluxe Edition 08/25 (PC, PS4 (September 29th for Switch))

This was an okay game on 3DS. Nothing really amazing. Seems like a weird candidate for remastering. But it’s not the first time since there was a Wii U/PS3/Vita release of the 3DS, so this is a remaster of a remaster.

Absolver 08/29 (PC, PS4, Xbone)

A 3D brawler with horrible camera (at least in the one video I watched). Kinda slow, lots of blocking… It looks pretty boring. Maybe the video I watched of it was just bad/old. It’s cool that you can fully customize your moveset (or so it seems), but I dunno. Seems pretty meh.

Hello Neighbor 08/29 (PC, Xbone)

This was in early access or open beta or something for a good long while. Does anyone even care about this anymore? It already had a Game Theory episode and people breaking the shit out of it LONG before this release date. I dunno.

Redout 08/29 (PS4, Xbone)

The purely-inferior-edition, since it’s neither on PC with better performance or on Switch with portability. Still looks like a cool game that I do want to get at some point.

Warriors All-Stars 08/29 (PC, PS4)

The Warriors games are fun, sure, but I don’t know what the point of an “All-Stars” version is. Might as well just release more based on licenses, these seem much more interesting overall.

Windjammers 08/29 (Vita, PS4)

A classic NeoGeo arcade game. It’s Pong mixed with a fighting game, special moves and dashes and all, and it’s super fun. Definitely one I recommend (as someone who owns the arcade version of it).

Life Is Strange: Before the Storm — Episode 1 08/29 (PC, PS4, Xbone)

I still haven’t played Life Is Strange. So I’m not interested in this one at the moment. This is a prequel to the first one.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle 08/29

You got X-com in my Mario!
No, you got Mario in my X-com!
… Delicious!
Yeah so this looks pretty fun. People were confused when details of the game started leaking out (that lone photo of Rabbid Peach without context was… really fucking weird), but seeing it at E3, plus the passion of the dev behind it, people did end up pretty hyped for it. I’m excited to try it out, it looks really fun and unique. I hate the Rabbids, but they don’t bother me here at the moment. You get to shoot the fuck out of them too, so that helps.

Patapon Remastered 08/01

Did people really care that much about Patapon on PSP? It kinda confuses me. Like the LocoRoco remaster. At least this was better than LocoRoco, but it wasn’t anything really noteworthy IMO. The idea was cool, rhythmically giving commands to your army to be offensive or defensive or something like that, but it felt boring after a few levels.

Matterfall 08/15

A side-scrolling platformer, but each level has a bit of exploring to find extra stuff. It’s twin-stick for aiming, and there’s some cool ways to create platforms and interesting movement options. Looks fun.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy 08/22

It’s Uncharted therefore it sucks. This was part of the Uncharted 4 season pass, but it’s not really DLC, you can buy this without having Uncharted 4. Eh.

Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash 08/29

Big boobed anime ninja girls… in bikinis and white shirts shooting each other with water guns. I’m pretty okay with this. It actually looks slightly fun. I’ll wait for the non-console release though.

Everybody’s Golf 08/29

GOLF! This is from the Hot Shots Golf series, they decided to go with the non-US name for this release for whatever reason.

Yakuza Kiwami 08/29

Yakuza is always an interesting series. This is a remaster of the first one. Cool.

Starcraft Remastered 08/14

So if you want to play the original Starcraft you can download it for free, or pay money for this one but have better graphics… I find that kinda odd. But hey this seems to have cross-version play so that’s nice.
