Games coming out in February 2018

Well January was pretty quiet gaming-wise, but it does seem like things will speed up a bit soon.

So this month I’m counting: 14 multiplats, 2 PS4 releases, 2 Switch releases and a 3DS release. Nothing really huge here. There’s 2 games I’m getting for sure and a bunch of maybes. We’ll see.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning for any reason. Probably missing stuff because game companies are shit about announcing release dates nowadays (and good at delaying games near release), and I’m not gonna dig through the hundreds of trash indie games that come out on Steam every day to find the one or 2 okay ones that pop up occasionally. So if there’s no/few indie games here, it’s pretty normal.

Also I’m skipping the boatload of indie game ports and third-party ports on Switch that will probably come out. I guess the more noteworthy ones this month would be… Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus and Payday 2? Pac-Man CE2 sucks though.

EA Sports UFC3 02/02 (PS4, Xbone)
If you thought the loot crates in Battlefront 2 were bad with the pay-to-win (before they temporarily removed the option to pay for them), this game’s even worse with that. It shouldn’t be surprising though, EA have been doing bad microtransactions with their sport games for a while.
I’ve been asking for a new Fight Night for a while now… Yeah I’ll pass on that now, clearly it’d be ruined by microtransaction lootboxes too.

Dandara 02/06 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone)
This is a cool-looking 2D platformer, where you have no normal movement (you stick to walls, floors and ceilings), but you can dash towards other surfaces to stick to those. Seems pretty fun.

Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late[st] 02/09 (PS3, PS4, Vita)
animu af
I’m not familiar with this fighting game series. It has anime-style characters and stuff. Looks fun. This is the second or third version of it.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 02/13 (PC, PS4, Xbone)
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
I’ve been hearing about it for years now but I never really saw much about it other than the name going around. It’s a kickstarter game that was supposed to come out 3 years ago it seems. It’s an RPG of sorts that seems to have interesting ideas and lots of ambitious stuff that probably won’t turn out too great and the combat (from a very recent video) seems pretty blah. I’ll wait to see some impressions.

Dynasty Warriors 9 02/13 (PC, PS4, Xbone)
Dynasty Warriors 9
It’s Dynasty Warriors. There’s lots of these already that come out all the time. I haven’t actually played a “standard” DW game since 2 I think, I only ever play the ones based on other licenses anymore. They’re just a bit more fun to me.

The Longest 5 Minutes 02/13 (Switch, PC, Vita)
The Longest 5 Minutes
This wasn’t on my radar at all but I just watched a trailer and it looks pretty cool. You play a generic JRPG protagonist, facing against the final boss after a long quest, but then you lose your memories including your special attacks and party members, so in 5 non-real-time minutes before the world is ended you traverse through the hero’s memories, gaining “re-experience” points and re-becoming strong enough to fight the final boss. It seems intriguing.

Owlboy 02/13 (Switch, PS4, Xbone)
This came out on PC a bit over a year ago. It looked really cool, I never actually ended up checking it out. It seems metroidvania-ish, you play as a kid that can fly, he can carry other characters who seems like they handle the attacking and such. I may check it out one day.

Secret of Mana 02/15 (PC, Vita, PS4)
Secret of Mana
Why no Switch? With Squeenix being very supportive of the Switch, it’s weird that this game would skip it (and yet the Vita keeps getting games). They’ve taken bigger chances with the Switch than this already, you’d think this one would be a given.
That said, Secret of Mana is considered a classic for good reasons, hopefully the 3D conversion works out fine. I’ll wait a bit to see if it will end up coming to Switch, otherwise I’ll get it on PC on sale.
(and as I post this I did notice that Squeenix are indeed “considering” a Switch version… what’s there to “consider”? Just do it, it’ll probably sell better there than on the other platforms… OR, even better, don’t do it and instead localize that Seiken Densetsu collection that’s already out in Japan.)

Fe 02/16 (Switch, PC, Xbone)
It’s a 3D platformer. It’s very pretty. And that’s all I know about this. I’m not super interested, but I’ll check some reviews.

Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time 02/20 (PC, PS4)
Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time
Little Witch Academia is probably the biggest anime kickstarter success, by Studio Trigger (an anime studio I’m a pretty big fan of despite some of their more troll-y things). The anime itself is really fun, though a bit slow-paced, and it features Trigger’s trademark crazy animation style, with some really epic scenes. The game is a side-scrolling beat ’em up. Might have RPG elements, hard to say from the trailers I’ve seen.

Metal Gear Survive 02/20 (PC, PS4, Xbone)
Metal Gear Survive
Why is this a thing? Is anyone even buying this obvious trash?
I honestly can’t figure out what the thought process was for this thing.

Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet 02/23 (PC, PS4, Xbone)
Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet
It’s SAO, probably with a less stupid story than the anime. Looking at the gameplay it looks like it’s gonna be slow-paced and boring and grindy. Eh.

Dragon Quest Builders 02/09
Dragon Quest Builders
I played the demo for this on Vita I believe, maybe PS4. I didn’t end up getting it. I wanted it but they didn’t release a physical Vita version in the west… So I’ll get it on Switch instead.

Bayonetta 1+2 02/16
Bayonetta 1+2

Buy this game. It’s too expensive for a port, yes, but whatever, you must have this game. You didn’t get it on Wii U. So get it on Switch instead. Bayonetta 2 is very awesome.

Shadow of the Colossus 02/06
Shadow of the Colossus

A remaster of a remaster of a shitty game that’s boring as fuck. I’ll never understand the hype for this. It’s extremely boring, the gameplay design is subpar.

The Seven Deadly Sins: Knights of Britannia 02/19
nanatsu no taizai

Nanatsu no Taizai is a pretty fun anime about OP people fighting against other OP people. Lots of cool characters with random cool powers. The game though… It looks okay, seems pretty generic as far as gameplay goes. After playing a great anime-based game like Dragon Ball FighterZ it would feel kinda weird to go play one that seems a lot more generic.

Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology 02/13
Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology
This was a pretty cool RPG on DS that I don’t remember at all. Eh. It’s probably great. I just don’t care about touching my 3DS again.
