Games coming out in April 2018

So another month with not lots of posts. Just not too many noteworthy games coming out this year, the few that people seem to like so far this year either suck, and there’s like one or two I particularly care about but they seem pretty good. However I do have a review coming for Ni no Kuni 2, and I’ll be starting up my first Atelier game in years after that, and there’s a few things coming in April I might talk about. I wish I could actually get some content out on more frequently but it’s just not happening.

So in the meantime here’s the monthly list of upcoming games!

So this month there’s: a PC game, 4 multiplats, 4 Switch things (technically 5 but whatever) and 2 PS4 games.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning for any reason. Probably missing stuff because game companies are shit about announcing release dates nowadays (and good at delaying games near release), and I’m not gonna dig through the hundreds of trash indie games that come out on Steam every day to find the one or 2 okay ones that pop up occasionally. So if there’s no/few indie games here, it’s pretty normal.

Also I’m skipping a bunch of indie stuff (usually ports) on Switch, and maybe some other stuff, I dunno (it seems like Ys VIII is getting a PC release this month but I can’t find a date… I only care about the Switch release TBH).

Battletech 04/24

This is based on the classic tabletop wargame, where you basically get squads of giant mechs to fight each other. The original tabletop game is very deep, both in lore and actual gameplay. This new game seems to somewhat attempt to replicate the experience, with lots of customization for your robots and a similar gameplay style. I’m not super interested myself but it does look really well done.

Penny-Punching Princess 04/03 (Switch, Vita)

This is digital-only on Vita, but who would get a game on Vita that’s coming out on Switch? That said, this is a top-down action-RPG of sorts made by Nippon Ichi, so I’m pretty excited about it. It has that pixelated visuals thing going on, weird stuff you can do with spending money on attacks and upgrades and bribes in dungeons… Basically money is everything in this game, you try to get money but you have to spend some to fight. It looks like it will be pretty interesting.

Gal*Gun 2 04/24 (Switch, PS4)

Gal Gun is a really stupid series that I love. It’s essentially an on-rails light gun zombie-shooting game (like House of the Dead style), except the zombies are anime schoolgirls confessing their love to you and you must stop them by shooting them to the point of orgasm with your… pheromone gun. It’s damn fun even if it’s a stupid game with weird perverted minigames.
If you like stupid shit (that’s still actually fun), check this out.

Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion 04/24 (Switch, PC, PS4, Xbone)

Open world Adventure Time game. We’ve seen very little of it thus far, and the little I’ve seen of it (a “pre-alpha” bit of footage that obviously wasn’t pre-alpha) seemed kinda meh. So whatever… Does remind me I need to catch up on this show, I gotta be like 2 seasons late.
BTW I don’t even know if this release date is real because game companies suck at announcing release dates. So take this post with a grain of salt, I see this all over the place from online stores but no actual sources for that date. Who knows.

The Swords of Ditto 04/24 (PC, PS4)

This is a top-down action beat ’em up game, with gameplay that reminds me a lot of Zelda but maybe a bit more… brutal? I don’t quite know what it’s like even when looking at gameplay, but it does seem like it might be fun. It has a very american cartoon-y look to it.

Wild Guns Reloaded 04/17

Wild Guns is fucking awesome, Reloaded is fucking awesomer, and now you can play it anywhere. Get this game. I’m easily double-dipping on this game, and so should you. It would be a mistake to miss this classic.
It’s a remaster of a classic SNES game, with updated (but still SNES-style graphics), new levels and new characters. Not the most known SNES game but one of the better ones.

Nintendo Labo – Variety Kit and Robot Kit 04/20

I don’t think I’ll really mention future kits if they happen, but this is the first release of Nintendo Labo and it’s such an interesting, cool idea. Not an idea I care about myself and I’m not buying it (I posted about that the day after it was announced), but I think people who will get it will enjoy it.
Impressions from preview events have been very positive, and it sounds like it works better than anyone expected.

South Park: Fractured But Whole 04/24

This came out last year on the other platforms, nice to see it here. I’ll wait for it to go down to the price of the other versions (which I already found for 15$US for the PC version, physical), but I might grab that at some point. I’m in no hurry though.

Boruto’s Dad Ultimate Ninja Storm Trilogy 04/26 (digital only)

Huh. So this includes Ultimate Ninja Storm 1, 2 and 3… but that’s kinda odd isn’t it? Why not Generations, Full Burst and 4? Eh. They’re fun enough games though, if you’re a Boruto’s Dad fan you should check them out if you haven’t already.

Yakuza 6: The Song of Life 04/17

I incorrectly had this one on last month’s list… hey not my fault when game companies can’t settle on a date ever and different sources had different dates for several months (I’ll have another game as a good example for that next month… maybe… if the date I have now is correct). That said some people managed to play the full game a while ago, when Sega mistakenly uploaded the full game instead of the demo on the PSN. Hopefully everyone who played it that way are buying it, as it’s a series that needs the support in america.
Note that impressions are positive, as expected from Yakuza.

God of War 04/20

I never liked God of War. The gameplay never felt quite as good as it should’ve been. It LOOKED cool but it wasn’t fun to play. It “ripped-off” Devil May Cry (I remember some of the memes back when the first one came out) but forgot to copy its good gameplay design. Hitting things never felt good, there was very little strategy since your wide attack hits everything around you… might as well just play Devil May Cry.
This particular game changes a lot though. Gone is the good camera from the other games that clearly shows everything you need to see from a good distance, allowing the gameplay to flow and you to see what’s happening. Now this has an over-the-shoulder third-person shooter super-restrictive camera, without the shooting, so you can’t see shit because literally half the screen is covered by Kratos (and, to adapt to the game being too limited, they put warnings when enemy attacks are coming from off-camera).
It’s very odd to me how much they’re changing. But maybe it’s gonna be fine. The changes are the reason I’m giving a chance to God of War for the first time since that boring God of War 3 demo. I don’t have high hopes though. It’s giving me the same vibes The Last of Us, a game I absolutely fucking hate for being one of the most boring games ever. In fact that lame kid following Kratos around just makes that feeling even stronger.
I don’t think this game will be good, but who knows, I might be wrong. I can’t imagine a God of War fan being happy about how this game looks. I wouldn’t be. Why am I getting it then? Well, I feel like I need something to play on my PS4, since last time I truly used it was for Persona 5 (nothing else that I can’t get on PC that’s worth talking about came out on PS4 after Persona 5… no I’m not counting the 3 levels of Knack 2 I played)
