Blaster Master Zero review

March 10th, 2017 No comments

blaster_master_zero
Blaster Master is an absolutely classic NES game (there’s also a GBC game, a Genesis game that sucks and a Playstation game I never played… Blaster Master Boy doesn’t count, it’s a sequel to a Bomberman spin-off). It’s also very hard. The series got a revival in 2010 on Wii called Blaster Master: Overdrive, which I recall being fairly solid, though thinking back on it the graphics were kinda unattractive. It was very much like the original but with new kinds of upgrades and it was fun.

Blaster Master Zero is a something of a remake of the original Blaster Master, and I was hyped for it as soon as it was announced. Moreso when it was confirmed for Switch.

Let’s see if it’s good!

Games coming out in March 2017

February 24th, 2017 No comments

Right, so a few cool things came out in February, but not much. I’m lining some things up for reviews/impressions. Not sure when I can get some of them out.

So March has one platform coming out with 12 launch titles and another later in the month. Otherwise I’m highlighting 4 PS4 releases, 1 that may be a PS4 release or a multiplat release, 12 multiplats, a PC release and a 3DS release.

Yeah, just a few days left, March is gonna be huge.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning. Probably missing stuff because game companies are shit about announcing release dates nowadays (and good at delaying games near release). Indies in particular are kinda random, or bad at making their games known (I get that it’s hard, but if I don’t see anything about your game before it comes out, I can’t very much highlight it). So if there’s no indie games here, it’s pretty normal. I won’t spend hours that I could be playing games watching videos for indie games I have no immediate interest in.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King review

February 20th, 2017 No comments

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
I fucking love Dragon Quest. I’ve said this many times before and I’ll keep repeating it.

Dragon Quest 8 was a weird one because most people bought it not for the game itself, but for a demo for Final Fantasy 12 (which is weird to buy a game to get a demo to a game that’s not as good). It was also the first Dragon Quest release in Europe (poor bastards waiting so long to get one). So I got it like everyone else and somehow didn’t get really far into it, less than halfway. I’m not too sure why, something else got my attention at the time I guess.

So now that I’m playing it again I can finally see all the stuff I missed the first time!

Let’s go and see why this game is great!

Games coming out in February 2017

January 25th, 2017 No comments

Alright, January was kinda quiet (still a couple releases upcoming and some that I’m playing in preparation for review), but soon we’re getting lots of stuff coming out. Hopefully I can cover a lot of stuff, we’ll see. I’ve been wanting to make this blog a bit more lively and I think I’ve been doing a bit better with it of late.

So February… 3 PS4 releases (2 exclusive), 9-ish multiplats, a mobile release, a PC release and a 3DS release. Surprising amount of stuff for the PS4 once again, that’s nice and very unlike the PS4.

So let’s go and see what’s up!

Games coming out in January 2017

December 29th, 2016 No comments

And after all this stuff, it’s also time to start again with the monthly releases post. Of course the most important thing happening in January will be the Switch event from Nintendo. They better not mess that up. Another thing, the PS4 actually has a couple exclusives coming up in the next few months. That’s pretty surprising considering its track record so far (outside of a handful of VR games I guess), I hope it keeps up.

So we’re getting a couple things this upcoming month. Maybe a few things that could be pretty interesting. 1 3DS release, 5 PS4 releases, 6 multiplats, a PC DLC (not something I usually highlight) and a Vita filler.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning. Probably missing stuff because game companies are shit about announcing release dates nowadays (and good at delaying games near release). 2017 in video games – hype or no hype?

December 29th, 2016 No comments

So that’s it for my GotY 2016 stuff. 2016 was a fairly weak year overall. So while I’m not SUPER EXCITED for 2017, there’s a handful of games I do have lots of hype for, so I figured I’d highlight some of those. Just for a quick fun post.

Let’s go and hope 2017 is a step up from the last 3 years. (note that this was written before the Switch event, so who knows if anything more is going to be officially announced there)

EDIT: I had to change this because Microsoft are stupid idiots and cancelled Scalebound… which might not be THAT big of a shame since it seems MS fucked with the development in the first place, as evidenced by a Kamiya tweet from 2015… but I’m still disappointed (also I did other small edits)

Games of the Year Awards 2016

December 28th, 2016 No comments

Right so we had ourselves quite a year in gaming. And by “quite a year” I mean “nothing fucking happened”. It had games, some of them good, but it felt kinda empty, even when stuff was coming out at a more regular pace. There really isn’t much to discuss. As such, choosing winners for the 2016 Games of the Year was not easy. At all.

So read on and see what I’m naming my top games of the year! We’re starting with a quick mini-rant of the year as a whole, then the 5 winners (with one of them being the top winner because of arbitrary reasons), then a couple of honorable mentions and finally, a bunch of losers. Because why not.

Games I won’t review – Dragon Ball edition – Fusions and Xenoverse 2

December 18th, 2016 No comments

So I’ve been a Dragon Ball fan for a long time. I watched the original DB as a kid, watched DBZ as soon as it started, read most of the manga, and I’m watching Dragon Ball Super now even though it kinda sucks most of the time, because it’s more Dragon Ball. It’s kind of a generic anime to be a fan of, but whatever, I like it.

So today I’m writing non-reviews for 2 Dragon Ball games I got recently, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 and Dragon Ball Fusions. Games that are actually surprisingly similar despite not at all playing the same.

Note: These non-reviews don’t mean the games are bad, just that I might not have enough to say for a full review, or haven’t/won’t end up playing enough to write a full review, but I still want to talk about them. In this case both games are good.

Games I won’t review – Pokemon Sun and Moon

November 28th, 2016 No comments

Pokemon is one of those almost-but-not-quite-yearly series that tend to do things pretty well. It started with a strong core, and built up new things bit by bit in sequels. In the end you’re playing a game that’s very similar to the one you played before, but the small changes end up giving a slightly different experience.

It’s been 3 years since the last proper new game in the series (not counting Omega Ruby and Sapphire, because they’re remakes), and the hype for Sun and Moon was very high.

Let’s talk about these a bit!

Games coming out in December 2016

November 26th, 2016 No comments

So in the November release post I never updated that Dragon Ball Fusions was coming out. It got its release date changed from December to November partway through the month. I expect to play it soon if Amazon.ca stop being shit and actually send it to me. I also have a few other posts planned. Not sure I can keep the number of posts going as much as I have recently (which is a lot more than usual), but I’ll try.

Oh and I won’t put Shantae on the list again, if it comes out it comes out, I’m not expecting it until next year at this point. Also Wild Guns Reloaded seems to have a december release date now, but sources are all over the place for that, some saying it’s in japan only and stuff. So I dunno what’s up.

So despite December being in the heart of the holiday season, no one likes releasing games in December. That has always baffled me just a little. This month we’re getting basically nothing, as per tradition. 1 PS4 release, 1 3DS release, a mobile release that I consider somewhat noteworthy and 2 multiplat releases.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning. Probably missing stuff because game companies are shit about announcing release dates nowadays (and good at delaying games near release). Indies in particular are kinda random, or bad at making their games known (no, putting your release date in your kickstarter updates isn’t gonna get the word out). So if there’s no indie games here, it’s pretty normal. I’m just highlighting the most noteworthy stuff and the stuff that actually has release dates that are easy to find.

Not much to see here, but maybe something is interesting for you here?
