Video Gaming – What are the Gold Standards?

January 15th, 2010

The other day I started randomly thinking about this: What are the gold standards in the gaming industry? What games best define their own genre? This is what I set out to figure out.

Let’s go right away and define what “Gold Standard” means. It’s pretty simple. It has to be:
1. A game that defines the genre it’s in.
2. It has to be a high-quality game/series.
3. It still has to be fun to play.
4. Of course, it doesn’t need to be the BEST in the genre, but it has to be the one to have set most of the genre’s standards.
5. It has to be an older game, as much as possible.

So read on and see what are the Gold Standards in the gaming industry! Of course, if I’m missing a genre(there’s some I didn’t put in because I either could think of any 1 game that defined the genre, or that were too similar to another genre that I didn’t need to include them), or if you think about a game that I might not have thought about for any of the categories, be sure to comment!

Final Fantasy XIV from the point of view of an FFXI Veteran.

June 4th, 2009

Hello,

FFXIV logo

Recently having returned to my old addiction, FFXI, this announcement had caught my attention during the Sony press release of E3. Naturally, SquareEnix trickled out a bit more information about it. Since this was announced as an online multi player, it was immediately flagged to the FFXI community as it’s sequel. The forums have been buzzing with speculation. We see familiar faces, a familiar world. Exciting! People analyzing every single word of the speech they gave for the announcement. Was this PS3 only!? What about PC? Xbox360? FFXI being a multi-platform game, you could essentially run it on Ps2, PC, Xbox360 and with a bit of a stretch even a PS3 (emulated as PS2). Turns out it will be PS3 and Windows. They are however researching the possibility of releasing on Xbox360.

What Project Natal will do for gaming

June 2nd, 2009

If you’ve been following E3… at least for today… well, you’ve without a doubt learned about Natal(if you don’t, click this link), Microsoft’s new technology that might change the way games are played, or the home entertainment industry in general.

It features a bunch of motion sensors, a camera and microphone. It captures your movements to instantly translate them in-game, using both the camera and motion detectors. It also features a bunch of fun little features like voice and face recognition and a bunch of other random stuff. And all of that without having to use a controller. At all.

Basically, it has a ton of features and things it can do. So, I was basically wondering how it will really influence the gaming world.

So, read on to see what I think about this.

Too Human – An analysis of the video game reviewing industry

February 15th, 2009

Ah, video game reviews. I’m kinda familiar with that, obviously. Tell people about a game, and tell them if you liked it and why. Simple really. But seemingly not, as the standards of the reviewing world are pretty much screwed up.

I’ve got quite a few things to rant about here, so read on!

Jobocan’s Analysis : The current generation of gaming consoles

January 10th, 2009

***psssst…. check the contest… and we have a shoutbox now…. and you can digg our posts***

Well the current-gen has been going on for around 3 years now (well, a bit over 2 for  the PS3 and Wii, a bit over 3 for the 360), and it feels like it’s just about the right time to take a good look at each current-gen console, their merits, their faults, and just analyse the current situation in the video game industry.

We’ve got powerful polygon pushing consoles, and someone who changed their whole marketing schemes and that is trying something relatively different (sounds familiar….), but what state is the industry in, and what are the consoles like after a few years on the market?

Now I want to make this an analysis mostly around the gamers, consoles and games, so I won’t go around talking about sales statistics and all that crap.

Check out what I’ve got to say on this.
