Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective review

January 18th, 2011

Well this is something I was interested in. What I saw of the gameplay concept before playing it seemed very interesting, and the art looked good. So, while I wasn’t SUPER hyped for this, I definitely wanted to check it out.

I missed out on checking out the demo, so I went at it light-heartedly, and what I found surprised me. A lot.

So read on and see why!

Games coming in January 2011

December 29th, 2010

Well, I’m a bit late on the “next month’s release list” post, mostly because I had to finish all the Games of the Year posts, but now that we’re done with that we can look at what 2011 will bring to gaming, of course starting with January.

Being a fairly tame month, there’s only a few interesting releases: 3 multiplatform games, 2 PS3 exclusives, 3 DS games and 1 PSP game.

Games of the Year awards 2010: Best DS games

December 18th, 2010

Let’s continue those Games of the Year awards now!

The DS had a pretty good year. Especially on the RPG side of things, almost all our possible winners were RPGs, it’s crazy! But, nonetheless, the DS continued proving that it was still and will remain… probably until the 3DS comes out… arguably the best pure gaming device out at the moment, despite the oceans of shovelware.

Again, if one of your favorites has been omitted, don’t hesitate to comment about it. As long as you don’t come in trolling/flaming, we’ll be happy to explain why it wasn’t chosen. It might be because none of us played it, or it might have actually been one of our possible winners.

So let’s see what our choices were! Here are our winners for best DS games of the year!

The Save Points’ 2010 Games of the Year awards incoming

December 14th, 2010

Well the end of year is coming, so obviously, like any respectable video gaming website, we’ll post our favorite games of the year, seperated into multiple categories. We’re a bit different here though, and we’ll choose winners that are very different from… probably every other gaming website (other than one category where everyone will have the same winners). And our format is a slight bit different.

Here are the categories (fairly straightforward):

Best PSP Games
Best DS Games
Best Downloadable Games
Best Multi-Platform Games
Best Wii Exclusives
Best Xbox 360 Exclusives
Best PS3 Exclusives
Biggest Surprises of the year
Biggest Disappointments of the year
Games of the Year

Each category will have 4 winners (I wanted to do 5 winners per category, like we did last year, but turns out that very few of the categories had enough worthy nominees, so we went with 4 instead). The final post will be the Games of the Year post, which will have 3 winners instead of 4.

People might wonder why we don’t only go with one winner… And that’s fairly simple: it adds more variety and gives a good view of a lot of the really good games in all the categories. It’s not like there’s actually a “best game” in any of the categories, so showcasing a lot of the good ones seems like a fine alternative.

Oh, and, when I say “Exclusives”, that’s exactly what I mean: games that ONLY came out for that system. Therefore, games that came out for PC in addition to the 360 are NOT 360 exclusives (I shouldn’t have to explain this…  but I might as well since people apparently don’t grasp the concept of exclusivity).

So yeah, look forward to our 2010 Games of the Year winners in the following few days, with a post every day or two until we’re done with all the categories. Cheers!

Sonic Colors review/impressions

November 29th, 2010

Sonic games on consoles have been pretty terrible after the Genesis. The Adventure series was a step in the right direction (I mean, all the non Sonic/Shadow levels sucked, but the Sonic and Shadow levels were good), but everything afterwards has sucked. The more recent Sonic Unleashed, however, DID get some praise. Why? Well, while half the levels were a completely terrible GoW rip-off, the speed-based levels did manage to find an audience. But… they weren’t actually any good, it’s just that, in contrast to the crappy Werehog levels, they actually seemed sort of fun.

Listening to the criticism from the previous game, Sega did what they thought was the logical thing, and made the whole game just like the daytime levels in Sonic Unleashed. Was it a good or bad thing?

999: Nine Hours, Nine People, Nine Doors review

November 26th, 2010

Definitely not enough nines in this title...

From the writer of the acclaimed “Ever 17: The Out of Infinity” comes a story about nine people who find themselves onboard a ship with strange watch-like wristbands locked to their arms as they search desperately for a way to escape. Did the game wow us with an intricate story and great characters, or did it sink like the Titanic itself? Read on to find out…

Games coming in November 2010

October 21st, 2010

Well, October has been a fairly good month month, hasn’t it? Castlevania which has found a fanbase (despite some people (like me) really not liking it), Kirby being fairly okay, Vanquish kicking ass, ZHP kicking ass, new Fallout, new Fable, NBA Jam being pretty good despite the bad release strategy, Sonic 4 being badass, Lufia being awesome, Rock Band 3… And I could go on. This really has been a good month for gamers, whether you’re more oldschool, more modern, or anything in-between. Rarely does such a diverse month show up.

Will November follow suit? Well, there’s one HUGE DS release, 9 multiplatform releases with a few interesting ones in there, 1 fun PS3 exclusive, 1 BIG release on the Xbox 360…. that might not interest everyone… and 5 Wii releases (4 of which look possibly good).

Read on and see if November is planning on kicking as much ass as October!

Games coming in October 2010

September 20th, 2010

Wow, we haven’t had a lot of new posts recently… Let’s blame this on the fact that releases have been pretty scarce recently. Or that Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep refuses to be reviewed (the loading times are so horribly long I can’t find myself playing it any more than I have).

But at least I have something to post about, with October on the way. So here’s our monthly list of interesting/notheworthy games coming in the following month. October is getting 16 multiplatform releases, 3 Wii exclusive releases, 1 Xbox 360 exclusive release, 4 Nintendo DS releases and 1 PSP release. No PC or PS3 releases other than multiplatform releases.

So read on and see what October has in store!

Random DS review – New Zealand Story Revolution

September 5th, 2010

There’s a game on the NES I really like called “Kiwi Kraze”. It’s incredibly hard as many people who played it can attest to (check out LordKat’s video on the matter), but it’s well made and fun to play. What I didn’t know about the game is that it was actually not only on other consoles, but that all the other games in the series had a different name than on the NES: New Zealand Story. This was brought to my attention recently, and I found out there was a version on the DS. So I decided to check it out.

Yeah, the review is massively late, but that’s because I didn’t know about the game until recently. And who doesn’t like checking out good obscure games no one knows about?

Read on and see if I liked it or not! (short review before publishing my Metroid: Other M review)
