Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild… review?

March 19th, 2017 No comments

Zelda Breath of the Wild

There it is, potentially the biggest game of the year. In a year of a surprisingly decent amount of really cool games games coming out, Zelda still ends up being at the top of the list for GotY contenders (and that was even before anyone had played it).

So as I was playing this game, and even after being done, I was wondering… how are you supposed to review this game? I feel any reviewer that talked in-depth about gameplay is doing it wrong, because the gameplay itself is something that is… spoilable. Basically, Breath of the Wild is a game that should be played “blind”. The less you know about it, the better the experience (at least in the first couple hours).

So what I’m attempting here, rather than an actual review, is a sort of… discussion of my thoughts on the game. I’ll include a big spoiler warning in before elements that I consider spoilers.

Nintendo Switch console impressions

March 15th, 2017 No comments

switch neon bundle
So the Switch is out. We’ve had some time to play it, and I didn’t want to rush this “review” (not really a review, you can’t review consoles until the end of their life). I could’ve written this day 2 (which was day 5 for everyone else), but that’s a bit hasty. I took a good week to live with the Switch, try it out in different configurations and such, play some games.

So yeah, I feel like I’ve had the full Switch experience at this point (as far as hardware goes) and I can talk about it. I’ll talk about games separately (whenever I get far enough in Zelda to be able to review it), this is about the platform itself.

Blaster Master Zero review

March 10th, 2017 No comments

blaster_master_zero
Blaster Master is an absolutely classic NES game (there’s also a GBC game, a Genesis game that sucks and a Playstation game I never played… Blaster Master Boy doesn’t count, it’s a sequel to a Bomberman spin-off). It’s also very hard. The series got a revival in 2010 on Wii called Blaster Master: Overdrive, which I recall being fairly solid, though thinking back on it the graphics were kinda unattractive. It was very much like the original but with new kinds of upgrades and it was fun.

Blaster Master Zero is a something of a remake of the original Blaster Master, and I was hyped for it as soon as it was announced. Moreso when it was confirmed for Switch.

Let’s see if it’s good!

Games coming out in March 2017

February 24th, 2017 No comments

Right, so a few cool things came out in February, but not much. I’m lining some things up for reviews/impressions. Not sure when I can get some of them out.

So March has one platform coming out with 12 launch titles and another later in the month. Otherwise I’m highlighting 4 PS4 releases, 1 that may be a PS4 release or a multiplat release, 12 multiplats, a PC release and a 3DS release.

Yeah, just a few days left, March is gonna be huge.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning. Probably missing stuff because game companies are shit about announcing release dates nowadays (and good at delaying games near release). Indies in particular are kinda random, or bad at making their games known (I get that it’s hard, but if I don’t see anything about your game before it comes out, I can’t very much highlight it). So if there’s no indie games here, it’s pretty normal. I won’t spend hours that I could be playing games watching videos for indie games I have no immediate interest in.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King review

February 20th, 2017 No comments

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
I fucking love Dragon Quest. I’ve said this many times before and I’ll keep repeating it.

Dragon Quest 8 was a weird one because most people bought it not for the game itself, but for a demo for Final Fantasy 12 (which is weird to buy a game to get a demo to a game that’s not as good). It was also the first Dragon Quest release in Europe (poor bastards waiting so long to get one). So I got it like everyone else and somehow didn’t get really far into it, less than halfway. I’m not too sure why, something else got my attention at the time I guess.

So now that I’m playing it again I can finally see all the stuff I missed the first time!

Let’s go and see why this game is great!

Games I won’t review – Digimon World: Next Order

February 7th, 2017 No comments

Digimon World: Next Order
So last year we got Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, and my review for that was pretty positive. It was a fairly standard JRPG with the whole digivolving concept that let you have a large variety of Digimon in your party. It wasn’t the most amazing RPG out there but it did the job quite well.

So I figured, hey, why not buy the follow up. However I should’ve read this game’s title correctly, because this isn’t Digimon Story like Cyber Sleuth was, this is Digimon World. And what I got when I turned on the game just baffled me.

Why is this a “Game I won’t review”? Well, simple enough: I’m about 10 hours in, and I’m tired of it, and despite all that time spent I’m not even through Chapter 1 yet (don’t know how many chapters there are, don’t care). I’m basically writing this as a review, but please don’t take it as such.

Let’s go!

(this is really long for a “not review”, but I can’t consider it an actual review)

Games coming out in February 2017

January 25th, 2017 No comments

Alright, January was kinda quiet (still a couple releases upcoming and some that I’m playing in preparation for review), but soon we’re getting lots of stuff coming out. Hopefully I can cover a lot of stuff, we’ll see. I’ve been wanting to make this blog a bit more lively and I think I’ve been doing a bit better with it of late.

So February… 3 PS4 releases (2 exclusive), 9-ish multiplats, a mobile release, a PC release and a 3DS release. Surprising amount of stuff for the PS4 once again, that’s nice and very unlike the PS4.

So let’s go and see what’s up!

My final post about the Switch before it comes out

January 16th, 2017 No comments

switch neon bundle
Alright, so I want to make this my final post about the Switch, at least until it comes out. I don’t tend to give this much attention on here to new hardware, but the Switch is… different.

After the presentation on January 12, I was left… confused. It was really a weird presentation overall, it was disappointing but also had some really exciting aspects. I didn’t know what to feel about it, so I decided, after posting my “live” reaction, that I’d sleep on it for a few days and figure out what I actually think about the Switch.

So… let’s gather my thoughts, and let’s rant about this.

I will try to get the most stuff I can think of out of the way so I can not post about the Switch again until release. So this might be a bit long. But this isn’t a pointless post. I try to not repeat too much of the stuff I’ve said before, though I might.

Nintendo Switch Presentation 2017 – My Reaction (and other stuff)

January 13th, 2017 No comments

So we had ourselves a Switch presentation huh? Actually I don’t know what it was like because I’m writing this part before the actual presentation. I’m making this a sort of “reaction” post with some editing, we’ll see how that turns out.

Let’s go!

(spoilers from future Jobocan: it was… something… Yeah I won’t be super positive about it, even if I’m still super excited about it… also I had a big pre-show rant written before the presentation, but fuck it, that’s not important so I removed it.)

Games coming out in January 2017

December 29th, 2016 No comments

And after all this stuff, it’s also time to start again with the monthly releases post. Of course the most important thing happening in January will be the Switch event from Nintendo. They better not mess that up. Another thing, the PS4 actually has a couple exclusives coming up in the next few months. That’s pretty surprising considering its track record so far (outside of a handful of VR games I guess), I hope it keeps up.

So we’re getting a couple things this upcoming month. Maybe a few things that could be pretty interesting. 1 3DS release, 5 PS4 releases, 6 multiplats, a PC DLC (not something I usually highlight) and a Vita filler.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning. Probably missing stuff because game companies are shit about announcing release dates nowadays (and good at delaying games near release).
