Golf Story review

October 9th, 2017 No comments

I wasn’t too interested since this was a golf game, but it was also an RPG and people who bought it before me were being fairly positive about it. So I figured why not.

Let’s go and see if it was good!

Games coming out in October 2017

September 25th, 2017 No comments

Hmm… Well October this year has some of the biggest releases of the year, plus a bunch of smaller cool things. I have no idea how I’ll manage to play everything I am getting in the month.

So we’ve got 1 Switch exclusive, 20 multiplats, 4 3DS games, 2 PS4 things and a late port on PC. I’m getting a pile of these.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning for any reason. Probably missing stuff because game companies are shit about announcing release dates nowadays (and good at delaying games near release), and I’m not gonna dig through the hundreds of indie games that come out on steam every month to find the one or 2 okay ones that pop up occasionally, unless some higher-profile indie things I care about comes out. So if there’s no/few indie games here, it’s pretty normal.

*EDIT: added a game in the multiplat section*

Games I won’t review – Mary Skelter: Nightmares

September 23rd, 2017 No comments

Sometimes there’s games I don’t review because they suck and I don’t want to play all the way through, but sometimes there’s games that I do actually like but I end up making some kind of mistake and which kinda ends up ruining the game for myself. This one is such an example.

It’s one of them first-person grid-based dungeon-crawling RPGs, and the Vita is FILLED with those, so I don’t know if I would’ve ended up doing a full review, but I do like talking about them anyways.

So let’s talk about this game a bit!

Metroid: Samus Returns review

September 22nd, 2017 No comments

metroid samus returns
It’s so nice for Metroid to be back. Other M was a good while ago now and it was unfairly maligned. It wasn’t amazing, but it was better than you’ve heard. At E3 2017 Nintendo made the big reveal, Metroid Prime 4 coming to Switch. Awesome. Then they followed it up with “by the way here’s a complete remake of Metroid 2”. That was pretty amazing for Metroid fans. Not only is there a new Prime coming, but there were in fact 2 Metroid games coming out, when it seemed like Nintendo might have abandoned the series altogether after Other M (and some other thing that wasn’t Metroid).

There was an element of worry here, with MercurySteam being the developers. They made all 3 Castlevania Lord of Shadow game, including Mirror of Fate which was a Metroidvania style of game, and all these games sucked horribly. But I didn’t let their past sins influence my hype. I figured maybe all they needed was Nintendo’s guidance to end up doing something actually good.

Metroid 2 itself was a game that was cool, but hard to play, especially now… The Game Boy had a tiny low-res screen, so to have the detailed graphics that game had also meant you couldn’t see very far around Samus’ sprite. It’s pretty hard to go back to that game. So a remake is a very suitable thing. There WAS a remake called AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake) but it was fan-made and Nintendo did what all companies are legally compelled to do and shut it down (though they should’ve done so 10 years ago when it was starting development, not be dicks and wait 10 years for it to be ready). With their own remake coming, it made sense to remove the fan-made one, beyond the legal reasons of protecting their IP.

So let’s go and see if this remake is any good!

Games I won’t review – Drive Girls

September 11th, 2017 No comments

drive girls
I like buying random stupid games, and japan is usually where those come from. When I saw Drive Girls I figured it was right in my wheelhouse. A car game where the cars are actually anime girls that transform and it’s actually a beat ‘em up rather than the racing game it looked at in the first few screenshots I saw? Alright, I’ll check it out.

And now that I’ve played it… I kinda don’t wanna review it. So in this edition of Games I won’t review, some animu game!

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle review

September 4th, 2017 No comments

BWAH!

So this is a game that was rumored a bit before the big Switch reveal event in January, the question on everyone’s mind was “Why?” with a bit of “This can’t be real” and “The Rabbids are still a thing?”. Pre-E3 we got a leak, a picture of Rabbid Peach, which lead to “Okay this looks bad”. However not long after that leak there was another leak, showing internal release plan materials and some gameplay details and… my curiosity was piqued. Then at E3 proper I think everyone remembers the moment where Miyamoto went on stage to present the game and creative director Davide Soliani got super emotional… That’s when I got really excited. This was clearly a project of passion (something that’s not a frequent occurrence at Ubisoft). Plus the gameplay trailer looked really fun.

So the hype was pretty big, early impressions were just straight up positive, and finally we got it in our hands. I finished the main story as of this writing, though there’s still plenty of content to go if I so wish, but first let’s review this!

Games coming out in September 2017

August 28th, 2017 No comments

We’re getting right around when the biggest releases of the year come out. Not quite there yet, but getting there. I did manage to get several posts out despite the fairly slow August, and I do still have a few things to post about during September, so I’m pretty happy about that.

So for September we’ve got: 1 console, 3 3DS releases, 7 non-sport multiplats, 5 sport multiplats, 2 Switch games, 3 PS4 games, 2 PC games and 2 Vita games. And there’s a rant in here.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning for any reason. Probably missing stuff because game companies are shit about announcing release dates nowadays (and good at delaying games near release), and I’m not gonna dig through the hundreds of indie games that come out every month to find the one or 2 okay ones that pop up occasionally, unless some higher-profile indie things I care about come out. Sonic Mania review

August 16th, 2017 No comments

sonic mania

Sonic has had a pretty troubled history after his near-domination of the 16-bit generation. People tend to love the Adventure games, and I do to some extent… you know, as long as you’re playing as Sonic or Shadow. Most of the games past that are pretty bad, but there’s a few standouts. Some of the handheld games are good enough, then you have Generations that was pretty great, Lost World was good too. Sonic 4 Episode 1 was one I believe only I liked, people really hated it for reasons that didn’t make sense to me (episode 2 sucked balls though). Everything I didn’t name? Shit. I get that it’s most of the series, but that’s kinda Sonic’s deal past the Genesis.

So when Mania was first shown off, EVERYONE was paying attention. The developers involved, the style mimicking the Genesis games everyone agrees are great, and several other things that were shown off… just really resonated with the fanbase.

My hype was through the roof, as was nearly everyone else’s. So let’s check out if it meets the hype or not.

Splatoon 2 review

August 2nd, 2017 No comments

Splatoon was my Game of the Year 2 years ago. I was really happy when Splatoon 2 was announced at the Switch reveal event, since I was expecting just a “deluxe” version of the first game. It’s the first online-focused game I really gave a crap about, and seeing a whole new version of it is great.

Not much else to say as an introduction, so let’s get right to the review.

Hollow Knight impressions

July 31st, 2017 No comments

I love Metroidvanias. I actually didn’t hear about Hollow Knight when it came out back in February, but more recently I’ve seen a lot of people talk about it, so I grabbed it during the Steam Summer Sale after seeing just a few screenshots that had a Metroid-style map.

Like The End is Nigh this isn’t a full-on review (even though I’ll write it as such), because I’m not done with it yet and who knows when/if I will be. And I don’t know how close to the end I am. And it’s about time I write about it.

So let’s go and talk about this thing.
