I just came back from the live Iron Maiden show at the Ottawa Bluefest. I’m generally not much of a showgoer, but when I learned Iron Maiden were coming to Ottawa, I just had to go. And they have Dream Theater playnig just before them for this tour, which is pretty cool.
It was my first time seeing them live, so here’s a brief recounting of my experience seeing the awesomest band in the world live!
Read on! (Note: there will be spoilers, so if you’d rather have the setlist be a surprise for when you see the show yourself, don’t read the first 3 paragraphs of the Iron Maiden segment) Read more…
Video game music (at least from the old days) is awesome. There’s really no denying that. If you’re a regular on Screwattack, you surely know about Brentalfloss. If you don’t, here’s the idea: he takes an old video game song, and adds lyrics to it. While there’s a few that just aren’t that good, it can make for some pretty fun songs. If you want to check out his stuff go to his page on screwattack.
He recently released an album which includes remastered versions of his songs, with slightly changed instrumentals, and some new songs altogether. I decided to check it out, so read on and see what I thought of it! Read more…
Helloween is an AWESOME band… or at least were. In recent years their songs haven’t been nearly as good as their first few albums. And their 2000 album The Dark Ride had a few really good songs too. They did some great stuff, providing some great songs in the Power Metal genre. I mean, I Want Out is amongst the best metal songs ever.
When I saw this album at the store, I thought it would be a great idea. Orchestrated music, guest artists, and “re-imagined” versions of some of their best songs for the band’s 25th year anniversary. How could it go wrong?
If you want to see some J-Rock on Rock Band, go on jrockrevolution.com and vote for the bands you’d like to see, either as official Rock Band downloads, or on the new Rock Band Network!
You can vote for up to 10 bands. You can also vote multiple times for one band if you want to. For example, I put in 4 votes for Maximum The Hormone since they’re so damn badass
Since there’s been literally no news on Rock Band Japan since it was announced, it’s great to see that someone is doing something to get some Japanese music on there for everyone to play.
I love Power Metal. And one of the better bands representing the genre is Gamma Ray. They always have great guitar, great bass, great drumming, and some of the best singing voices in the genre. They’re one of those bands that didn’t lower in overall quality as the years went by, so all of their albums are really good.
Their previous album, Land of the Free II, was incredible, with none of the songs being bad, and most of them being excellent. It was truly something to behold. So obviously I was quite hyped up for this release.
Now, does To The Metal live up to their previous effort, or does it fall short?

I was searching around the web to find a deal on a Power Glove for the NES. Unsurprisingly, I didn’t find anything good in that regard, with the piece of shit being either incredibly hard to find, or way over-priced when I DID find it.
But the search wasn’t ENTIRELY fruitless, as I did manage to find something of interest that combines 2 things I love: old-school video game music and Power Metal. What I found was Power Metal band Powerglove.

Ah Green Day. A band I grew up with and still love to this day… Kinda. Everything up to their “Warning” album ranged from good to awesome, “Warning” was okay, and then they screwed up with the release of “American Idiot”. An album hailed by critics and the average person as being incredible, but was no good at all. Not only the worst Green Day album (yes, even compared to Shenanigans), but a complete change of style from “punk-rock” to “pop-rock” to get more “popularity”.
I hoped that the crappiness was just a phase, and that their following album would actually not be a big piece of shit. So here comes 21st century breakdown… a title that pretty much means nothing!
SO I’ll start this up with a mini-retrospective of the band, basically just talk about their albums, and then I’ll review the new album itself.
Read on and see if Green Day are back to their former greatness, or if being popular is more important (for them). Read more…
Quick post here. It’s been about a month since one of the anime I mentioned a few months ago started airing. K-on! is aiming at the same audience that loved Suzumiya Haruhi no yuutsu and Lucky Star. Now I’m not gonna review anything here. Just sharing the awesome ending sequence with its song. Kudo to Kyoani on the animation style here. I really love it, it just feels fresh and stylish compared to what we’re seeing lately.
In general, AC/DC has always had its own unique sound. Overall great rock, high energy all-around, and just fun to listen to(and how can you not like).
It’s been 8 years since the last AC/DC album. So does Black Ice retain the same quality as previous AC/DC albums? Let’s check it out! Read more…

Queen is awesome. Queen is easily one of my favorite bands ever. But Queen without Freddy Mercury… Does it work? It definitely didn’t when they made a rap version of Another One Bites the Dust. But maybe, just maybe this will be a good return to form.
Well, when I read that Queen was making a return, I was ecstatic. Having been a fan of them for a while (but more in the recent years when i actually bought a few albums by them), I really couldn’t wait to see how they’d perform in this “Queen +” project.
