Games coming out in October 2017

September 25th, 2017 No comments

Hmm… Well October this year has some of the biggest releases of the year, plus a bunch of smaller cool things. I have no idea how I’ll manage to play everything I am getting in the month.

So we’ve got 1 Switch exclusive, 20 multiplats, 4 3DS games, 2 PS4 things and a late port on PC. I’m getting a pile of these.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning for any reason. Probably missing stuff because game companies are shit about announcing release dates nowadays (and good at delaying games near release), and I’m not gonna dig through the hundreds of indie games that come out on steam every month to find the one or 2 okay ones that pop up occasionally, unless some higher-profile indie things I care about comes out. So if there’s no/few indie games here, it’s pretty normal.

*EDIT: added a game in the multiplat section*

Games coming out in September 2017

August 28th, 2017 No comments

We’re getting right around when the biggest releases of the year come out. Not quite there yet, but getting there. I did manage to get several posts out despite the fairly slow August, and I do still have a few things to post about during September, so I’m pretty happy about that.

So for September we’ve got: 1 console, 3 3DS releases, 7 non-sport multiplats, 5 sport multiplats, 2 Switch games, 3 PS4 games, 2 PC games and 2 Vita games. And there’s a rant in here.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning for any reason. Death Note (2017) Netflix movie review

August 25th, 2017 No comments

I don’t frequently review movies, but this is one I believe I can talk about a bit. I’m a bit of a Death Note fan after all. In fact I have an actual Death Note somewhere in my house.

Anime/manga live-action adaptations have a pretty spotty history in America. There was a Fist of the North Star movie that sucked, Ghost in the Shell had pretty mixed reviews (I haven’t seen it yet, I plan to eventually), Dragon Ball Evolution might be one of the worst movies ever, and I don’t remember hearing anything good about Speed Racer back when that came out.

From Japan I have actually seen a few anime/manga-based live-action films that were decent, but there were good for a pretty specific reason. Cutie Honey (both the movie and the TV series… there’s also a newer movie I missed) was pretty good, Prince of Tennis was kinda decent, Great Teacher Onizuka had a pretty fun TV series, Ranma 1/2 has a 2011 movie that was pretty good, the first Rurouni Kenshin movie was quite cool (I need to watch the sequels), the Jojo Part 4 movie looks pretty cool (I really want to watch that), the Kaiji movies were decent…

More importantly and relevant to this review, the Death Note movies were quite solid. There’s one focused on L that was a bit meh, and a new one that takes place several years after the original movies that was okay, but the first 2 were pretty fun as I recall. I know I missed a shitload of movies based on manga in Japan, but these are the ones I’ve seen and enjoyed (I’m sure there’s plenty of crappy ones). What made them so enjoyable was their adherence to the source material and keeping within the style of the series they’re based on, even if they took several liberties. It’s kinda like why the japanese Phoenix Wright live-action movie is good, but, say, The Legend of Chun-Li was terrible.

So since we already have acceptable Death Note movies out of Japan, I was curious about what they’d do with it in America. Maybe it would bust out of the usually-negative impressions people have of anime movies in America.

I’ll talk about the movie itself, how it fares as an adaptation and if it’s any good by its own merits. Let’s go!

THERE MAY BE SPOILERS… I kept it low, but there’s details here and there.

Games coming out in August 2017

July 24th, 2017 No comments

Halfway through the summer, there’s not a LOT to talk about. That said, I do have a few posts to make eventually when I have time to write them.

So August… A surprising amount of releases, but not much I find particularly noteworthy. There are a few quite cool things here though that I’m really excited for. We’ve got: 20 multiplats, a Switch release, 6 PS4 releases and a PC release.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning for any reason. Probably missing stuff because game companies are shit about announcing release dates nowadays (and good at delaying games near release), indies especially. So if there’s no/few indie games here, it’s pretty normal.

Edit: added a multiplat game on July 27
Edit2: removed a Vita game on August 2, moved to next month

The “Why Nintendo might be back” rant

July 20th, 2017 No comments

So Nintendo. They’re very much worth talking about recently. They’re really interesting. When the competition is happy with not doing much of anything, essentially stagnating, it’s nice to see Nintendo not only shaking things up, but also being properly successful again too.

There were a lot of questions related to the release of the Switch after the failure that was the Wii U (a console I really enjoyed and defended quite a bit despite its obvious shortcomings and Nintendo’s blatantly stupid decisions) and how the company was run during the Wii. After several months of the Switch being out and their overall direction being more obvious than at launch.

So I thought… hey let’s rant about Nintendo somewhat. I’ve talked a bit about the Switch a good amount this year, but this is a bit more than that.

This is a BIIIIG rant, so grab some popcorn.

E3 2017 – Final thoughts

June 16th, 2017 No comments

E3 2017 is done. It was pretty bad, especially after having time to sleep on it and think about what was shown.

I already wrote about the specific presentations in a “live commentary” style (semi-live when it comes to Bethesda), look at my previous posts for that. This is more about the entirety of the online experience of E3 2017 (not really sure why people rushed out to get tickets to actually go there and wait in lines), and other ranty notes.

Let’s go!

E3 2017 impressions – Day 1: Nintendo

June 13th, 2017 No comments

So right now as I’m writing this intro we haven’t seen Nintendo’s Spotlight presentation, or the Treehouse stream. And what I’m currently saying is… Nintendo just has to show up and, whatever “winning E3” means, they’ll do it. It’s a pretty sad year when Ubisoft and MS had the best presentations so far.

Today: Nintendo’s showcase presentation, as well as a bit of the Treehouse stream since there’s apparently more announcements there.

Let’s go and talk about this! This is my second to last E3 post, next will be in a couple days with an overall impression of this E3 as a whole.

E3 2017 impressions – Day -1: Sony

June 12th, 2017 No comments

My PS4 was actually turned on a few times this year, so that’s an improvement over last year. Sony needs to keep that up though. And there’s a distinct chance they could, but for that they need to go all-out at E3. Let’s see!

Second post today: Sony’s E3 Presentation.

Let’s hope it’s good and not just Knack 2.

Nintendo post tomorrow.

E3 2017 impressions – Day -1: Ubisoft

June 12th, 2017 No comments

Since my “expectations” post we did get some new info, specifically about Far Cry 5 (see: not Blood Dragon 2 so who cares) and a leak for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle (I expect it here rather than Nintendo’s Spotlight presentation (with a segment for it at the treehouse stream later)), so hey, there might be something worth mentioning here… I expect nothing new other than Mario + Rabbids.

First post today: Ubisoft’s E3 Presentation

I assume that right now we need to get ready for a really bad dance number first… let’s see.

E3 2017 impressions – Day -2: Bethesda

June 12th, 2017 No comments

Okay you Bethesda fuckers… fuck you. People work on Monday, you get that, right? Why would you have this kind of presentation at MIDNIGHT (I know Europe usually gets fucked as far as these go, but not usually east coast US)? Fuck that I’m not watching this live. Thankfully I can still make semi-live reactions the morning after before going to work. Which is what I’m doing right now… Let’s watch this shit.

Day -2 part 2: Bethesda’s E3 Conference. Again these are “live impressions” (I avoided spoilers before watching after the fact). Yes we’re technically on Day -1 now but it’s a Day -2 presentation so whatever 😛

Let’s go! Get hyped for lots of DLC announcement probably.

(2 more posts laters today!)
