Dragon Ball FighterZ impressions

January 27th, 2018 No comments

The moment a Dragon Ball fighting game by Arc System Works was announced I was beyond hyped. Then seeing it in action at E3 a few days later was just amazing. It looked exactly like the anime, I’d say moreso than any other DBZ game. I got into the closed beta some time ago (note: this was literally the last time I used my PS4 before yesterday… that console is so pointless), and I loved it. It was really fun and well-designed.

I’m not buying this game, at least not yet. I never end up playing fighting games that much when I do buy them, and this is another case of me finding the DLC to be excessively expensive, so if I get this at all, it’ll be a GotY edition. However, a friend bought it and came over to play it all evening yesterday, so I figured, since I’m probably never reviewing it, I better talk about it now.

This will be quick impressions rather than a full review. Let’s go.

Thoughts on Nintendo Labo

January 18th, 2018 No comments

Nintendo seems to be one of the only gaming companies nowadays to really come out with truly unique, original ideas that no one could ever see coming. Arlo (cool youtuber you should check out if you like Nintendo) calls them the Kings of Left Field, because their announcements tend to be pretty out there. No one expected that Metroid Prime 4 logo, for example. The Switch itself has a lot of elements that are really unexpected, especially in the first year’s game library and lots of surprise releases and games coming out way earlier than anyone thought they would. Sometimes their left-field-ness is a good thing, sometimes it’s a bad thing.

So yesterday Nintendo announced “Nintendo Labo”. It’s being downplayed by people who mindlessly hate Nintendo as “OMG THEY’RE CHARGING SO MUCH FOR JUST CARDBOARD”, which is dumb. It seems the average reaction from non-crazy people is neutral to extremely positive. From what I’ve seen even people who don’t really care about it still think it’s a pretty cool idea.

So I thought I’d give my thoughts, since I know I’m not buying it once it comes out and will never have another occasion to talk about it.

(A lot of this is about the price, surprisingly)

Sonic Forces review

November 8th, 2017 No comments

sonic forces
So Sonic has had a a good year so far, with the awesome Sonic Mania. At the same time as announcing Mania, Sega announced another Sonic game in the more “modern” style, which is where the blue blur has been struggling for a while.

Not that he hasn’t had good games. Generations was great, Lost World was pretty good… and that’s about it. Almost everything else after the Genesis era has been pretty subpar, with very rare high points.

So is this a second high point for Sonic this year alongside Mania, or does it suck like so many other modern Sonic games?

Read on and see!

Games coming out in November 2017

October 23rd, 2017 No comments

Well I’m posting this slightly early. You know, Mario coming out and all, so I might as well push this before I have no time to play or write anything. Plus I have Wolfenstein 2 coming out on the same day, and several other games coming out close to the same time.. This’ll be rough. That said, I also have another post or 2 I kinda wanna do before that happens, so hopefully those’ll happen soon too.

So November… not quite as big as October  due to not having Mario, but there’s still several interesting games. I’m grabbing a small handful here.

November gives us: 1 PC port, 2 PS4 games, 3 3DS things, 4 Switch releases and 12 multiplats. Oh and a pointless black box.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning for any reason. Probably missing stuff because game companies are shit about announcing release dates nowadays (and good at delaying games near release), and I’m not gonna dig through the hundreds of trash indie games that come out on steam every month to find the one or 2 okay ones that pop up occasionally, unless some higher-profile indie things I care about comes out. So if there’s no/few indie games here, it’s pretty normal.

Games coming out in October 2017

September 25th, 2017 No comments

Hmm… Well October this year has some of the biggest releases of the year, plus a bunch of smaller cool things. I have no idea how I’ll manage to play everything I am getting in the month.

So we’ve got 1 Switch exclusive, 20 multiplats, 4 3DS games, 2 PS4 things and a late port on PC. I’m getting a pile of these.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning for any reason. So if there’s no/few indie games here, it’s pretty normal.

*EDIT: added a game in the multiplat section*

Games coming out in September 2017

August 28th, 2017 No comments

We’re getting right around when the biggest releases of the year come out. Not quite there yet, but getting there. I did manage to get several posts out despite the fairly slow August, and I do still have a few things to post about during September, so I’m pretty happy about that.

So for September we’ve got: 1 console, 3 3DS releases, 7 non-sport multiplats, 5 sport multiplats, 2 Switch games, 3 PS4 games, 2 PC games and 2 Vita games. And there’s a rant in here.

Death Note (2017) Netflix movie review

August 25th, 2017 No comments

I don’t frequently review movies, but this is one I believe I can talk about a bit. I’m a bit of a Death Note fan after all. In fact I have an actual Death Note somewhere in my house.

Anime/manga live-action adaptations have a pretty spotty history in America. There was a Fist of the North Star movie that sucked, Ghost in the Shell had pretty mixed reviews (I haven’t seen it yet, I plan to eventually), Dragon Ball Evolution might be one of the worst movies ever, and I don’t remember hearing anything good about Speed Racer back when that came out.

From Japan I have actually seen a few anime/manga-based live-action films that were decent, but there were good for a pretty specific reason. Cutie Honey (both the movie and the TV series… there’s also a newer movie I missed) was pretty good, Prince of Tennis was kinda decent, Great Teacher Onizuka had a pretty fun TV series, Ranma 1/2 has a 2011 movie that was pretty good, the first Rurouni Kenshin movie was quite cool (I need to watch the sequels), the Jojo Part 4 movie looks pretty cool (I really want to watch that), the Kaiji movies were decent…

More importantly and relevant to this review, the Death Note movies were quite solid. There’s one focused on L that was a bit meh, and a new one that takes place several years after the original movies that was okay, but the first 2 were pretty fun as I recall. I know I missed a shitload of movies based on manga in Japan, but these are the ones I’ve seen and enjoyed (I’m sure there’s plenty of crappy ones). What made them so enjoyable was their adherence to the source material and keeping within the style of the series they’re based on, even if they took several liberties. It’s kinda like why the japanese Phoenix Wright live-action movie is good, but, say, The Legend of Chun-Li was terrible.

So since we already have acceptable Death Note movies out of Japan, I was curious about what they’d do with it in America. Maybe it would bust out of the usually-negative impressions people have of anime movies in America.

I’ll talk about the movie itself, how it fares as an adaptation and if it’s any good by its own merits. Let’s go!

THERE MAY BE SPOILERS… I kept it low, but there’s details here and there.

Games coming out in August 2017

July 24th, 2017 No comments

Halfway through the summer, there’s not a LOT to talk about. That said, I do have a few posts to make eventually when I have time to write them.

So August… A surprising amount of releases, but not much I find particularly noteworthy. There are a few quite cool things here though that I’m really excited for. We’ve got: 20 multiplats, a Switch release, 6 PS4 releases and a PC release.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning for any reason. Probably missing stuff because game companies are shit about announcing release dates nowadays (and good at delaying games near release), indies especially. So if there’s no/few indie games here, it’s pretty normal.

Edit: added a multiplat game on July 27
Edit2: removed a Vita game on August 2, moved to next month

The “Why Nintendo might be back” rant

July 20th, 2017 No comments

So Nintendo. They’re very much worth talking about recently. They’re really interesting. When the competition is happy with not doing much of anything, essentially stagnating, it’s nice to see Nintendo not only shaking things up, but also being properly successful again too.

There were a lot of questions related to the release of the Switch after the failure that was the Wii U (a console I really enjoyed and defended quite a bit despite its obvious shortcomings and Nintendo’s blatantly stupid decisions) and how the company was run during the Wii. After several months of the Switch being out and their overall direction being more obvious than at launch.

So I thought… hey let’s rant about Nintendo somewhat. I’ve talked a bit about the Switch a good amount this year, but this is a bit more than that.

This is a BIIIIG rant, so grab some popcorn.

E3 2017 – Final thoughts

June 16th, 2017 No comments

E3 2017 is done. It was pretty bad, especially after having time to sleep on it and think about what was shown.

I already wrote about the specific presentations in a “live commentary” style (semi-live when it comes to Bethesda), look at my previous posts for that. This is more about the entirety of the online experience of E3 2017 (not really sure why people rushed out to get tickets to actually go there and wait in lines), and other ranty notes.

Let’s go!
