Star Fox 64 3D review

September 18th, 2011

I wasn’t sure if I was going to review this at all, for the same reason I didn’t review OoT3D. In the case of OoT3D… what would be the point? Everyone who can call themselves a gamer has played that glorious game at least once in their lives, and already know if they like it or not. There’s literally nothing I can say about OoT3D that hasn’t been said billions of times already. It’s a game that shouldn’t be reviewed.

But then I figured that Star Fox 64, while quite popular in its own time, is currently pretty much only know for “Do a barrel roll!” and “Can’t let you do that, Star Fox!”, basically just being a cheap meme machine. So… what the heck, let’s review it!

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron review

September 18th, 2011

A game based on an old religious book (the Book of Enoch)… sounds exciting, doesn’t it? Yeah, if you only told me that, I never would have even looked at El Shaddai, but after playing the demo, I was pretty excited to check it out.

Even after playing the demo, I wasn’t fully sure what to expect so… read on and see if I ended up enjoying it or not!

Elevator Action Deluxe review

September 1st, 2011

This is actually strange. I never liked the original Elevator Action. None of the versions I played of it ended up being enjoyable to me… The controls are always stiff and hard to get a good hang of, and make a potentially good game not really good at all. Yet, when I saw this was coming out, I really wanted to try it out.

I sort of reluctantly bought it when it came out, and… well, read on to see what I thought about it! (This should be quick)

3DS Ambassador: NES game super quick reviews!‏

September 1st, 2011

There’s people like me that were stupid/eager and bought the 3DS at/near launch, not knowing that the console would get a huge price drop really fast. Nintendo, being awesome, decided that the people who paid more may as well get some free stuff! They didn’t really owe it to us, but they did it anyways, so for that alone I’m grateful.

So yesterday/today, the first batch of free games was released (the 10 NES games), and I’ll give my impressions on each. Nothing big, just quick blurbs on each game. I’ll make this super quick!

Bastion review

August 28th, 2011

Bastion seems to have taken the gaming world by surprise, and the gameplay I’ve seen before playing it seemed interesting. I really got interested when all I saw for this was positive. It was a small downloadable game made by a small team, and that’s frequently a good thing. It looked good, it looked fun… that’s worth paying a small amount of money to check out, right?

So read on and see if Bastion was worth the hype! (this will be a shorty)

Breath of Death VII: The Beginning + Cthulhu Saves The World review

August 10th, 2011

I don’t frequently go into the “Indie Game” isle of my local downloadable game service, but this is one that caught my eye.

A classic-style console/JRPG with not-so-serious stories and 8/16-bit graphics? That’s fairly interesting. Now I was originally planning on reviewing both games separately, but Cthulhu Saves the World and Breath of Death VII are nearly identical, so I’ll be mixing them up here.

Read on and see if your 3$ is worth spending!

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon review

July 12th, 2011

Sometimes it’s a great feeling to play a low-budget game that’s made solely with the idea of being fun to play, rather than concentrating on pointless stuff like graphics and story. And that’s what EDF is all about.

The previous game in the series, Earth Defense Force 2017, was a ton of fun, even though it was clearly made with a 2 dollar budget.

Let’s check it out and see how this one holds up, shall we?

Sanctum review

July 12th, 2011

I think I’ve made it clear before: I have a very rational hatred of this generation’s flood of crappy first-person shooters that never attempt to be fun and/or original. Only a handful of FPS games this generation have managed to really get me to like them and that’s because they all tried something different. For example (the only examples really): Mirror’s Edge had great first-person platforming and overall fun parkour elements (with the gunplay being downplayed), Portal was a fun/funny puzzle game, Bulletstorm had an awesome scoring system and was fun just due to how many ways you could kill enemies/find ways to maximize your score, DNF was one of the only modern FPS to be just a bit of old-school FPS fun with tons of variety, Borderlands was essentially Diablo with guns… And those are basically the only FPS I managed to enjoy this generation.

I’m always looking for FPS that actually attempt to do something different/more with the genre, because I can see the advantages of a first-person perspective, but it’s sad that it’s almost always used to shoot people behind cover and nothing much more. Most potentially-interesting FPS are disappointments (like Singularity) and very few end up being enjoyable to me, such as the ones I mentioned above and today’s subject: Sanctum.

Read on and see what it’s about.

Alice: Madness Returns impressions

July 12th, 2011

I never played the first American McGee’s Alice, beyond a demo back when it came out which left me unimpressed. The art I saw for the game was generally very nice, but the actual game didn’t really click with me.

Madness Returns, however, seemed pretty interesting in previews I’ve seen, so I decided I’d check it out as soon as it came out, though negative reviews all around made me decide to just rent it.

Since I haven’t come close to finishing the game (done with chapter 2), this is an impressions post rather than a review, though honestly I doubt the game throws any curveballs gameplay-wise, so I’m pretty sure I’ve seen everything that is to be seen here (considering the total lack of BOSSES in the game…). So read on and see what I thought (I’ll make it short).
