Xenoblade Chronicles 2 review

December 23rd, 2017 No comments

I didn’t think I’d actually finish this game. I didn’t finish the first Xenoblade Chronicles (because I kinda got tired of it a bit past the halfway point), I didn’t finish Xenoblade X (because it sucked), and I figured this would continue that tradition. You know what it is? It’s the Switch. The ability to not HAVE to play it on my TV or PC means I could play it more, and multi-task more easily.

So I was somewhat excited for this one, the announcement in January came as a surprise, and the fact that it was announced for this year was also pretty surprising (though less so in subsequent interviews where the game was said to be in development alongside Xenoblade X). People didn’t believe it would make a 2017 release but here we are. So it’s basically the last big game this year.
So let’s check it out see if it’s good. I’ve organized this review slightly differently from usual to address all I want to.

Note: This review was written before the latest patch was released, I don’t know if it fixes some of the things I’ll talk about.

Other note: This review is fucking long. Here’s a link to the overall thoughts.

Something to check out – Video game randomizers

September 23rd, 2017 No comments

So here’s something I got pretty interested in semi-recently. They’re a great way to get back into games you might already love. Part of this for me is watching community-organized tournaments, other part is actually learning these myself. That would be video game randomizers. Take a game, put it into a program, and switch things around. All sorts of things. It gives you a new perspective on how the games are designed and how they can be played.

So yeah, I want to talk about these, specifically the ones I play or have overall good knowledge of. I certainly don’t know all of them, and there’s a lot. Some for modern games, some for classics. But I’m focusing on the classic games that are a bit faster to play through in the first place.

Video game randomizers are fan-made and require ROMs to use them, and I don’t intend on distributing ROMs here and expect anyone who reads this to procure said ROMs legally (which means dumping your own cartridge of the correct version of the game).

So I thought I’d do a quick post about this one thing I like. Let’s go!

SNES Classic Edition – Review of the games

June 27th, 2017 No comments

Well yesterday we had a cool announcement. After the success of the NES Classic Edition which Nintendo made no effort into capitalizing on (seriously guys, it’s free money, keep that stuff on the shelves… cancelling it was a huge mistake financially), they now have an SNES Classic Edition coming out. Longer controller cords, 2 controllers, 21 absolutely great games, and possibly the biggest surprises from Nintendo this year (which is crazy to think after E3).

Despite the mini-console being 3 months away from release… nothing’s stopping me from reviewing the most important part of it now, since I have played all the games in it.

I MIGHT write a review of the actual hardware once it comes out though. We’ll see. I will include “games that should’ve been in here” and other such shenanigans at the end of the post.

Let’s go!

Nintendo Switch console impressions

switch neon bundle
So the Switch is out. We’ve had some time to play it, and I didn’t want to rush this “review” (not really a review, you can’t review consoles until the end of their life). I could’ve written this day 2 (which was day 5 for everyone else), but that’s a bit hasty. I took a good week to live with the Switch, try it out in different configurations and such, play some games.

So yeah, I feel like I’ve had the full Switch experience at this point (as far as hardware goes) and I can talk about it. I’ll talk about games separately (whenever I get far enough in Zelda to be able to review it), this is about the platform itself.

7th generation send-off: The Consoles

October 6th, 2013 No comments

Here’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a couple months, and that is a sort of send-off for the 7th generation. With the 8th gen gearing up fully with the final competitors entering the ring in a month, it’s nice to take a look back at what was the longest generation in gaming. Rather than complaining about all the bad things this generation brought, I’ll be talking about the good things: THE GAMES. While, undoubtedly, the 7th generation was a low point for the industry in many aspects, largely because of game devs and publishers being complete and utter idiots, we still got a bunch of really solid games.

I’ve been starting to see a few of these “top 10 games of the generation” posts/videos coming out, and man there’s something wrong with all of them. First… top 10 is FAR from enough to encompass the great games of the gen. Second… They all featured a lot of odd choices. I saw one that had Wii Sports on it… I mean… only 2 games in the whole gen were better than Wii Sports, are you for fucking real? Same with including CoD (even people who don’t like the series included it in their lists), what the hell?

So what I want to do here (instead of something completely worthless like a top 10 that includes total crap on it because “it was influential” and ignores tons of great games) is to make a completely arbitrary list of great games. No ranking at all, no limiting my numbers, no fucking CoD, just talking about great games.

I’ll make 5 posts total for this: This one talking about the consoles, one for all the great multiplat games, one for exclusive games, one for downloadable games and one for handheld games. I want to keep it short though, so don’t expect extensive reviews for each game on the lists.

So let’s start talking about the consoles! Yes, this is the one part here that will have some “negativity” (just being realistic), but the other 4 posts will be all about talking about the great games this gen!

E3 2013 conferences rant

June 12th, 2013 No comments

As usual I do a quick impressions post about all the big 3 conferences. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are showing stuff and I’m just giving my opinion.

I’ll try to do something different from my usual inconsistent ranting… I’ll list the positives and negatives or whatever, with short comments, and then my overall impressions.

Generation 8 wishlist rant

December 31st, 2012 No comments

It is the dawn of a new generation in the video game industry. The first console of the 8th generation, the Wii U, just came out, and… we have no idea what the competition is doing!

But I figured I’d take this occasion to… basically make a wishlist of what I’d personally want the gaming industry to change this generation. Or rather, I’ll rant about a couple things that I believe are harming the industry.
It’s no secret that the 7th generation, while it did have a nice handful of amazing games, was an abysmal time for the gaming industry, even though it’s never been this profitable at least at the beginning of it (I say at the beginning because so many studios have been getting shut down recently and games progressively need to sell impossible amounts of copies to be profitable anymore, to the point where many million-sellers don’t even see a profit anymore). Just a lot of small or not-so-small things that happen in the industry that really bother me or give me a really bad feeling as to where it’s going.

So here are the things I hope the industry will change during this new generation!

Games of the Year 2012!

December 25th, 2012 1 comment

Wow, this year kinda sucked… In a way.
Usually I do a lot of GotY posts, with one per major system/handheld and one for multiplat releases (since including multiplat releases in “best of X system” awards is retarded GameTrailers), as well as overall winners, with 3-5 winners in each category if possible (because I feel it’s ridiculous to call anything a “best” game, and I like choice). This year there just aren’t enough great games for that.

Not to say there weren’t good games, but very few that I feel were good enough to be in the running for GotY. So, due to that, I decided to go at it in a very simple manner and do one post, and maybe put a couple honorable mentions at the bottom for games I didn’t feel were GotY caliber.

So… let’s go with this year’s winners right away!

(Please note: I may not have played every game that came out in 2012, so sorry if I missed anything that you feel should win… oh, and FUCK Journey and FUCK anyone who likes that vapid non-game POS… yes, that means you Jim Sterling)

We’re back!

January 26th, 2011 No comments

Yeah, we had a bit of trouble with the website in the past week or so, what with our previous host being a bunch of assholes and shutting down our site with no hope of ever being able to get it back or getting any kind of support from them without paying them loads of money. So we found another host, and have been screwing around in the last few days to get the site back to a working status. There’s still some things to be done, some posts haven’t transfered properly and such (and some are forever lost it seems), but I’m hard working to restore everything to it’s previous glory or whatever.

So I’ll be working on getting everything back properly and we’ll be back to writing posts normally again. And I have a few new types of articles in the work, different from just reviews and “what’s coming out next month” kinds of posts.

Keep watching!

Edit: Okay, maybe we’re not back, big problem with the links to posts not working

Club Nintendo 2010 Platinum Reward

November 10th, 2010 2 comments

This morning I woke up with a box in front of my door, addressed to me. I open it up to find a yellow “?” block.

After hanging it to the ceiling and hitting it from the underside, something came out! (okay, I didn’t really do that… yet)

I’ll say that it looks pretty badass. The paint isn’t perfect, like Peach’s lips aren’t colored at all. And the plastic is a bit on the cheap side. But overall it’s a very nice little statue.

Speaking of little, this is actually fairly small. It’s a good size but… I have a 4 inch tall mario figurine that I bought earlier this year, and it’s actually as slight bit taller than this one.

Anyways, this is a pretty fun Club Nintendo reward, and I’m currently looking as to where to display it in my room…
