Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment mini-review

April 1st, 2017 No comments

Shovel Knight is one of the few really strong examples of a successful video game Kickstarter. It was delayed nearly a year compared to the estimate date on the kickstarter page, but the wait was well worth it. Shovel Knight was a fantastic game in basically every aspect.

I don’t think I reviewed the first DLC, Plague of Shadows. But it was quite fun and felt like a completely different game than Shovel Knight despite taking place in largely similar levels and environments and using pretty much all the same components.

Specter of Torment is the latest DLC, and I thought I’d give my quick impressions about it.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero review

December 11th, 2016 No comments

With the utter fail that was the Mighty No 9 kickstarter project as a whole (and other utter failures like Star Citizen and the Ouya), trust for Kickstarter games have gone way down. but it’s not like every Kickstarter project HAS to be bad, or fail to deliver. Despite what it seems like, there’s occasionally a KS project that does turn into am actual game, and within that group there’s some that are actually good.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero was set to be one of these rare projects that would “for sure” end up being successful. And a couple days ago backers such as I got access to the game ahead of its release date (though that was following lots of delays, as is standard with KS projects).

I’m not SUPER familiar with Shantae (though I do have Risky’s Revenge and Pirate’s Curse on Steam, I haven’t actually played them), but I have seen a lot of them in reviews and such. I haven’t played the GBC game because it’s freakishly rare and expensive (though it IS on the 3DS Virtual Console so I might grab that eventually).

So here’s my early review of Shantae: Half-Genie Hero. Read on and see if this is one of those rare Kickstarter successes alongside the likes of Shovel Knight and a small handful of others!

Games coming out in October 2016

September 29th, 2016 No comments

September has been crazy, with DQ7 taking all my time and SMTIV Apocalypse staring at me and a couple other games I played. So I do have reviews on the way. I just need to have time to write stuff.

So October has a couple things: 1 Wii U piece of shit, 3 Vita releases, 1 PS4 piece of hardware (and some games I’m not listing), 17 multiplatform releases and 3 PC releases.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning. Probably missing stuff because game companies are shit about announcing release dates nowadays. Indies in particular are kinda random, or bad at making their games known. So if there’s no indie games here, it’s pretty normal.

Read on and see what’s coming up!

Games coming out in September 2016

August 23rd, 2016 No comments

Holy shit FFXV is coming o… wait it got delayed again. Oh well, at least there’s other stuff coming out and that means more time for me to play other RPGs. And maybe there’s gonna be enough releases for me to actually post stuff (or too much for me to be able to post stuff? We’ll see). I do want to start posting these rants I’ve had in writing for a while.

So despite FFXV being delayed (because of course), September still includes: 9 multiplats, 1 PS4 game, 7 3DS releases (8 if you count multiple versions) and 3 for Vita. Doesn’t sound like much (except for the 3DS, holy crap), but there’s some good or at least interesting stuff in here.

Games coming out in August 2016

July 27th, 2016 No comments

The summer months are always kinda slow. It might not look that bad when I count down the number of games right under this short paragraph, but it’s lots of filler. It’s pretty subpar overall.

August will include: 11 multiplats, 2 PS4 games, 1 PC release and 1 for 3DS.

Mighty No 9 review

I don’t really want to talk about this game. I mean, I just played the demo for Bloodstained by Iga, and it’s really solid. Can I talk about that instead? I’d love to talk about a solid kickstarter game instead of this.

Yeah so Mighty No 9. I remember all the excitement and the “Inafune is saving us from Capcom who isn’t releasing Megaman!” and stuff.

I played the demo for Mighty No 9 that came out some time ago. I forget when. I had fairly negative impressions of it, it felt that, after a long time in development, it was still less than half-finished.

It was billed as a revival of Megaman… so what happened? Read on and see!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan review

May 31st, 2016 No comments

TMNT Mutants in Manhattan
Okay so it seems Platinum Games are called in more and more to work on licensed games. Their previous output in this regard has been solid. Legend of Korra was clearly low-budget so the presentation was weak but on the gameplay side it was really strong. It got lots of hate but it’s not warranted. Transformers: Devastation was a great game that still felt like it had a bit of the presentation issues from Korra, but much stronger on that end and, again, really strong gameplay.

Star Fox Zero also did make me lower my expectations for this a bit because… you know. But hey, TMNT is a game where it’s possible Platinum had a bit more to do with. In SFZ’s case they were heavily restricted by Nintendo’s weird design ideas. But I couldn’t have guessed TMNT would be THIS weird. Made the review a bit complicated to write.

So let’s go and see what the game’s like. Read on!

(note: reviewed fully as a single-player game, haven’t and wouldn’t touch the multiplayer)

Games coming out in June 2016

May 23rd, 2016 No comments

I posted a bit more than usual in the last month (and there’s an upcoming review for Platinum’s TMNT game which should hopefully pop up before the end of the month), so that’s good. Not sure I can keep that up, unless I actually decide to post that big ass rant I’ve been writing for over a year (which I’d HAVE to post in multiple parts because right now it takes 25 pages in Word). We’ll see. And I figured I’d post this while waiting for Overwatch to come out today.

So June is fun, it’s E3 time and hopefully it’ll be a good one. As for game releases… There’s a few. June is giving us: 1 3DS game, 2 Wii U games, 15 multiplats and 2 PS4 releases.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning. Might be missing stuff because game companies right now are shit about announcing release dates nowadays.

Games coming out in May 2016

Hey this was a slightly more active month than usual, that’s nice. And right now I’m writing some pre-E3 rants even though it’s a bit early. A few reviews incoming too. Yay.

This month we’ve got: 7 multiplats, a Vita game, 3 PS4 games (whoa!) and a PC game.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning. Might be missing stuff because game companies right now are shit about announcing release dates.

Games I won’t review – Rise of the Tomb Raider, Halo 5, Rare Replay

January 28th, 2016 No comments

Since I just got an Xbone, I figured I’d review some of the games only available on it (well, some of the games I’m gonna talk about here, one of them’s a multiplat already, and will be moreso in a couple days), but… I won’t, other than my next post. Because there’s nothing to say about these games.

The Xbone is a nothing machine.

So in today’s “games I won’t review”, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Rare Replay and Halo 5 are games I won’t review, for similar reasons too, and here’s why.
