Kirby Star Allies review

March 19th, 2018 No comments

Kirby’s mainline games have always been good. While the series peaked at Super Star on the SNES, subsequent games were still solid, and still brought new ideas forward so, despite not being as good as Super Star, still gave us really good experiences.

Kirby Star Allies is the latest one, and it’s one I avoided information for as much as possible before release, outside of the reveal trailer I didn’t really pay attention to it. I knew it was a 4-player game, or at least let you get up to 3 followers at once if you played alone. It sounded interesting, but the few small clips I got a glimpse at made it look kinda weird to me.

Let’s go!

Sonic Forces review

November 8th, 2017 No comments

sonic forces
So Sonic has had a a good year so far, with the awesome Sonic Mania. At the same time as announcing Mania, Sega announced another Sonic game in the more “modern” style, which is where the blue blur has been struggling for a while.

Not that he hasn’t had good games. Generations was great, Lost World was pretty good… and that’s about it. Almost everything else after the Genesis era has been pretty subpar, with very rare high points.

So is this a second high point for Sonic this year alongside Mania, or does it suck like so many other modern Sonic games?

Berserk and the Band of the Hawk impressions

March 5th, 2017 No comments

Berserk and the Band of the Hawk
I don’t know that this is a kind of game that really merits a full review. There’s a lot of Dynasty Warriors games that use other licenses nowadays, so one review generally works for multiple games.

Berserk feels like a weird choice for the genre, at least as far as the story goes. That said, the idea of cleaving through armies with Guts’ giant sword is a great one. So I picked it up, basically as mild distraction until other stuff came out.

So this is a quick impressions post. Not doing a full review because I’m not fully done with it yet, and because there’s not really much to say about this game that a full review would cover.

Babymetal – Metal Resistance impressions

April 4th, 2016 No comments

Babymetal metal resistance
So here’s something that’s unlikely to surprise anyone: I like Babymetal. A few years ago I stumbled upon videos of a few of their songs and I thought it was both really fun and actually also really good music. It was, at the time, a unique concept with the mixture of Japanese pop (not something I usually like) and heavy metal, and it did it really well (with not many trying to do the same thing succeeding… closest might be Ladybaby… which has the weird factor for sure).

So I was fairly excited that a new album was coming out, 5 years after the first (seriously). I’m always happy when a band I like releases new material, so I was really hoping this would recapture the feel of the first album.

Read on and see if it’s good!

Note: There’s a reason I never review music, and it’s because I suck at it (and also I don’t really buy music very often). So we’ll see how good I’ll do here… I think it’s a better review than my past attempts.

Final Fantasy Explorers review

April 3rd, 2016 No comments

final fantasy explorers
Final Fantasy Explorers… I kinda just grabbed it because it had Final Fantasy in the title, I knew next to nothing about it. Looked like some action RPG and it seemed interesting enough.

Took me a while to review because I was playing other stuff, and honestly this review is far from complete despite me having played this game for a while. I’m definitely missing some elements

So let’s make this a mini-review, or an impressions post. Whatever you want. Let’s go!

Note that I didn’t play this multiplayer, so this is fully a single-player review.

AVGN 2: ASSimilation review

Angry Video Game Nerd II: ASSimilation
So the AVGN game apparently needed a sequel. I wasn’t unhappy to see it, I did actually like the first one despite the very obvious faults it had, but I figured that was it for the Nerd in gaming form (at least officially).

No real need to talk about my thoughts in regards to the AVGN since I think I did that last time, so let’s go and see if the sequel is better than the first!

Read on and see.

Mario Tennis Ultra Smash mini-review

December 6th, 2015 No comments

Mario Tennis Ultra Smash
So I didn’t want this game. I had it pre-ordered “just in case” on, and had been trying to cancel the item out of my order for over a month, to no real response from when their system ended up not letting me cancel it, even though they have before that. Horrid customer support on that side, even requestion for them to cancel it did not get me any help.

But once I got it I figured I’d play it anyways. So let’s go on this mini-review! Because a big review isn’t really needed for this.

Hand of Fate review

August 17th, 2015 No comments

Hand of Fate
I picked this up randomly, interested at the unique gameplay and the rogue-lite concepts. A weird resource-management board game mixed with action elements? Alright, I can do that.

So read on and see if it’s good!

Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures review

June 27th, 2015 No comments

AVGN Adventures
So here’s something that’s not secret at all: I used to be a HUGE AVGN fan. I started watching those videos (and literally every video James Rolfe has done outside of AVGN too that I could find, up to some years back) starting right from the start, with the very first videos reviewing Castlevania 2 and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. I watched a lot of his videos a LOT, almost every day for a while. I also have 5 of his DVDs even though I could just watch all his videos for free online.

At a certain point though I lost interest (some time before the horrendously bad R.O.B. video), though I still watch new AVGN episodes (while skipping all the really bad let’s plays he does with his friend). His humor just lost its luster, and he even got to repeating his own jokes over and over… and that’s not counting the “I’d rather *insert random action* with a *insert random animal* *insert random word for shit* than play this game” trope that he repeats all the fucking time.

So I am an ex-AVGN fan, I guess (I still like watching his older stuff from time to time… which I did while writing this review). I didn’t watch the movie (which the trailers showed me wasn’t going to be good anyways), and honestly I had no interest in the game either, but I figured I’d get it at a discount (2 years later :P).

So let’s go and see if this is good, or if it reflects the quality of so many modern Nerd vids!

E3 2015 rant!

June 17th, 2015 No comments

Alright, E3 time! And you know what that means! Yes, it’s time once again for me to angrily hate on everything that was shown at all the big presentations (alright, I wrote this part before the conference, I do quite the opposite if you skip to the end here). This includes Microsoft, Sony, EA, Ubisoft, Bethesda, Nintendo, Square Enix and “PC Gaming”, whatever and whoever that is.

My E3 hype-level before the presentations wasn’t really high. I had low expectations for every company doing a presentation. Sony, Microsoft, EA and Ubisoft always disappoint, Nintendo is very hit-or-miss, and I ran under the assumption that Square Enix wasn’t gonna be all that interesting, and that Bethesda would just be happy to have shown up at all.

I previously had “reactions” written down for everything in all the presentations for his post, but that was WAY too long, so I figured I’d reduce the length by a lot.

So let’s go, here’s my E3 conference thoughts! A quick intro for each presentation (wrote those before seeing the conferences), and a quick summary of my thoughts for each of the conferences with highlights and lowlights for each of them.
