Sonic Mania review

August 16th, 2017 No comments

sonic mania

Sonic has had a pretty troubled history after his near-domination of the 16-bit generation. People tend to love the Adventure games, and I do to some extent… you know, as long as you’re playing as Sonic or Shadow. Most of the games past that are pretty bad, but there’s a few standouts. Some of the handheld games are good enough, then you have Generations that was pretty great, Lost World was good too. Sonic 4 Episode 1 was one I believe only I liked, people really hated it for reasons that didn’t make sense to me (episode 2 sucked balls though). Everything I didn’t name? Shit. I get that it’s most of the series, but that’s kinda Sonic’s deal past the Genesis.

So when Mania was first shown off, EVERYONE was paying attention. The developers involved, the style mimicking the Genesis games everyone agrees are great, and several other things that were shown off… just really resonated with the fanbase.

My hype was through the roof, as was nearly everyone else’s. So let’s check out if it meets the hype or not.

Eskimo Bob Starring Alfonzo impressions

August 2nd, 2017 No comments

Before yesterday I knew nothing about Eskimo Bob. I actually supported the Kickstarter for this mostly because it was a new NES game, though I did get the Steam version instead of the cartridge (which seems like it will be out later this year, and you can find a link to pre-order it on the Eskimo Bob website). It was a nice KS since it was only back in May and I already have my game on Steam, really fast turnaround.

So I played a good amount of the game, and decided last night to check out what Eskimo Bob was all about… it was… even less than I was expecting (I watched 22 episodes). Cheaply animated, mostly unfunny flash cartoons that either had no point or were so short that I just wondered what happened. I wouldn’t call it enjoyable, but I’m sure it has some fans, as it is one of the longest running web cartoons, getting 53 episodes (usually around a minute long, counting the intro “song”) from 2001 to 2013 (and one of the stretch goals for the kickstarter was a new episode, which was reached but I don’t think it happened?). Not a fan of the show overall.

Eskimo Bob might not be cool, but maybe his game is. So let’s check it out! This is an impressions post because I’m not quite done with it, and forgot to write down my password when I last played so I’d have a bit to replay through and I don’t feel like doing that right now.

Hollow Knight impressions

July 31st, 2017 No comments

I love Metroidvanias. I actually didn’t hear about Hollow Knight when it came out back in February, but more recently I’ve seen a lot of people talk about it, so I grabbed it during the Steam Summer Sale after seeing just a few screenshots that had a Metroid-style map.

Like The End is Nigh this isn’t a full-on review (even though I’ll write it as such), because I’m not done with it yet and who knows when/if I will be. And I don’t know how close to the end I am. And it’s about time I write about it.

So let’s go and talk about this thing.

The End is Nigh impressions

July 31st, 2017 No comments

SUPEEEEEER MEAT BOOOOOOOY! Okay not really. But this is a game made by Edmund McMillen of Isaac and Meat Boy fame. And Tyler Glaiel, someone I never heard about before (sorry dude, this game is good though!). So I was pretty excited to try this out.

I’m not done with the game, which is why this isn’t a review. I’m around halfway through now, and I’m going through it pretty slowly. But I figure it’s about time I write about it. So if you want to consider this a review go for it I guess, but know that I haven’t played the whole thing yet.

So let’s go!

Games coming out in August 2017

July 24th, 2017 No comments

Halfway through the summer, there’s not a LOT to talk about. That said, I do have a few posts to make eventually when I have time to write them.

So August… A surprising amount of releases, but not much I find particularly noteworthy. There are a few quite cool things here though that I’m really excited for. We’ve got: 20 multiplats, a Switch release, 6 PS4 releases and a PC release.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning for any reason. Probably missing stuff because game companies are shit about announcing release dates nowadays (and good at delaying games near release), indies especially. So if there’s no/few indie games here, it’s pretty normal.

Edit: added a multiplat game on July 27
Edit2: removed a Vita game on August 2, moved to next month

Games I won’t review – Steam Summer Sales 2017 edition

July 1st, 2017 No comments

So it’s Steam Summer Sale time. Usually I buy nothing at these sales despite always having 30+ games in my wishlist being on sale every time. But I was bored so I picked up a few games. So I figure I’d do a “Games I won’t review” post for this year’s “haul”.

The reason for them not getting a few review or a standalone “Game I won’t review” post is because they’re slightly older games and not really worth dedicating a post to at this point.

There’s 2 games I got that are newer and probably still relevant to make a fuller review of, so I’ll have that coming hopefully soon if I get far enough in them (otherwise I’ll “not-review” them in a similar post to this).

Let’s go!

Games coming out in July 2017

June 28th, 2017 No comments

The summer is starting. Usually not a big time for game releases, however there’s a few things this month, including a few actually-big releases. It’s gonna be a quieter month for me after the rush that was E3.

So this month we’ve got: 3 Switch games, a PC release, 7 multiplats, 2 PS4 games and 3 3DS games.

Let’s go!

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning for any reason. *EDIT JUNE 30: I added a game*

E3 2017 impressions – Day -1: Ubisoft

June 12th, 2017 No comments

Since my “expectations” post we did get some new info, specifically about Far Cry 5 (see: not Blood Dragon 2 so who cares) and a leak for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle (I expect it here rather than Nintendo’s Spotlight presentation (with a segment for it at the treehouse stream later)), so hey, there might be something worth mentioning here… I expect nothing new other than Mario + Rabbids.

First post today: Ubisoft’s E3 Presentation

I assume that right now we need to get ready for a really bad dance number first… let’s see.

E3 2017 impressions – Day -2: Microsoft

June 11th, 2017 No comments

Alright, so Day -3 was kinda lame with EA, but we’re done with that and it’s Day -2 now. Microsoft is usually one of the bigger ones, but they tend to not really announce much of note either.

So today’s semilive commentary: Microsoft’s E3 presentation. That is live but then edited to make sure it’s readable.

I was gonna post Bethesda at the same time tonight, but I work tomorrow and Bethesda delayed their presentation to midnight on the east coast (it was previously a couple hours earlier), so I’ll wake up early tomorrow and do a “slightly less live” impressions for that then and post it before going to work.

Games coming out in June 2017

May 22nd, 2017 No comments

E3 is coming! As are my posts complaining that, once again, E3 sucked. And I can prove it sucked, because more than half the shit that was announced last year (or the year before, or the year before) still hasn’t come out. I don’t know if there’s any reason to be hyped about at this year’s E3 as a whole, but we’ll see. Someone could surprise us. At least we’ll see some Mario so that’s something. But as I mentioned in my E3 expectations post, I still love E3 even when it’s… not ideal. It’s still something I look forward to very much.

I will have several posts about E3 as usual. One combined post for Day -3 and Day -2 (EA, MS and Bethesda), one for Day -1 (Sony and Ubisoft and maybe the PC Gaming Show if that’s worth talking about), one for Day 1 (Nintendo and hopefully other random mentions of things that weren’t at the conferences), and finally, once E3 is over, an overall thoughts post.

So anyways, on to actual game releases in June. Not a huge month but there’s a small handful of cool things in there. I am getting a few of these for sure.

In addition to E3, June has: 9 multiplats, 3 PS4 games, 5 Switch games, 1 Vita game and 2 3DS games. I wonder how long its been since the Xbone got anything.

Let’s go!
