Games coming out in July 2011

June 25th, 2011

The summer in gaming is generally a bit of a drought… well, this month is surely proof of that, there’s pretty much nothing coming out.

We have 1 3DS releases, 3 multiplatform releases, 1 Xbox 360 release.

Read on and see if you’re picking anything up!

Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls review

June 25th, 2011

Well this coming out came to me as a surprise, and I enjoyed the little bit of the demo that I played. And the price seemed right, since it’s half the price it cost 2 years back when it came out in Japan.

This is my first forray in the Wizardry series, though I did try a few of the older ones after starting to play this. So I’ll go right away and say this: if you’re not amongst the hardcore of the hardcore, you may have trouble with this game/series. It’s fun, but it’s not exactly easy to play if you’re not accustomed to the retro.

So yeah, here’s my review!

Motorstorm Apocalypse impressions

May 17th, 2011

Just because I haven’t played enough of it yet, and probably won’t for quite a while, here’s a quick impressions post for Motorstorm Apocalypse.

Just for a quick background. I played the demo for the first Motorstorm; the controls got me out of it fast, those vehicles could barely turn properly. Later I played the PSP Motorstorm. Hated it. Didn’t play the second Motorstorm on the PS3 since I didn’t like the other 2.

So when I saw this one… the idea of constantly changing environments instantly reminded me of Split/Second, which turned out being a pretty bad game with horrible rubberband AI and not much else. I decided to try it out though, hoping that it would actually end up being Split/Second done right.

Was it? Read on and see!

Games coming in March 2011

February 27th, 2011

Ah, March. It’s frequently a pretty big month for game releases. This year it’s no exception, but not really because of the actual games coming out. This March sees the release of the next-generation of handheld consoles (note: next-generation will instantly become “current-generation” as soon as the 3DS comes out).

So this month we have: 18 3DS games for its launch, 10 multi-platform titles, 4 interesting DS games, 3 PS3 exclusives, 2 PC exclusives and 3 PSP games. There should be interesting games for everyone in March. And keep in mind those are just the interesting/popular titles, no shovelware in there.

Splatterhouse review

December 8th, 2010

Splatterhouse is a classic horror-themed series. It’s highly influential and the first 3 games in the series were great fun. Seeing previews and reviews of this game, I wasn’t expecting it to be really good, but I still wanted to check it out because I appreciate the originals, so I rented it, and played through it, as well as a bit of the extra content.

Read on and see if I enjoyed my time with the game!

Spelunker HD review

December 6th, 2010

Spelunker is a 1983 classic arcade game about, basically, the weakest hero ever, travelling through a dangerous cave to find treasure. The game came out on various systems (Commodore 64, NES, MSX in addition to arcades) and it was fairly popular. There was a sequel, which doesn’t seem as well known as the first, and, from what I’ve seen, is very different. Afterwards, the series has fallen into obscurity (with nothing coming between 1987 and 2009 in Japan). The only recent game that seemed to have anything to do with Spelunker was the indie game Spelunky, which is very different gameplay-wise from what I’ve seen, but clearly inspired by it.

After over 20 years in obscurity, Spelunker is finally back and ready to kick ass… sort of, considering kicking an ass would probably kill him.

Heavy Rain review

November 11th, 2010

Yeah, I know this game is 9 months old already, but I find that it’s still relevant to talk about it.

When I talk about modern gaming bringing the creativity and overall fun of gaming down, I usually state Halo, Call of Duty and God of War, as well as their legions of bad clones, as examples as to why gaming is currently sucking. But they have NOTHING on Heavy Rain in this regard. Heavy Rain is a display of almost everything that’s wrong about modern gaming. I took my time (9 months…) about getting it as a rental because I knew from the start I wouldn’t like it. But I wasn’t expecting it to be THIS bad considering how it has been getting positive reviews… But wow… This is BAD. WTF is wrong with everybody?

Read on and see how Quantic Dream’s attempt at trying to make gaming evolve fails!

Vanquish review

November 1st, 2010

This is a game that really surprised me. People who know me know that I hate modern TPS. They’re just not fun with their “get in cover, get out to shoot stuff, get back in cover” style of gameplay that’s just all sorts of boring. But, when I played the demos for Vanquish, I fell in love with it.

The fast action, not needing to constantly be in cover, and various fun gameplay mechanics made the demo a very fun experience, and hyped me up for the full version of the game.

Read on and see if I liked it as much as I anticipated!

Catlevania: Lords of Shadow review

October 20th, 2010

This seems to be happening a lot recently. A company takes a series that I love, and make a new game that just doesn’t seem to do the series justice. This is one such moment.

Castlevania is a series that I love, other than the 3D outings. The NES games are great, even Simon’s Quest (which suffered from badly-written NPC dialog and HAS to be beaten with a guide or map), the following-gen games (SNES, Genesis, PC-Engine CD) in the series were great (SCIV and RoB were fantastic), the change in style with SotN and all the handheld games that used that style were great… It has been a very solid series. With only a few black sheeps in the whole series.

Here, it’s taking a more God of War style, which really made me wary about it at first.

So read on and see if I enjoyed this change in style, or if it’s one of the aforementioned black sheeps

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 review

October 15th, 2010

Sonic 4! A true sequel to the Genesis series of Sonic games! Or so this is what it was advertised as. I wasn’t the only one who was caught by the hype.

But, as with most people, I was a slight bit skeptical about it since, you know, Sonic didn’t get a proper console game since… let’s say Adventure 2, but even that had a lot of lameness (AKA all the levels where you didn’t control Sonic/Shadow). The handheld games were okay, though never anywhere near the quality of the Genesis titles, but otherwise Sonic has really been having trouble, and frankly no one can deny that.

I did play the iPhone version when that came out, but I’ll comment on that later.

So read on and see if Sonic is moving away from sucking, or if he’s staying in his comfort zone of crap.
(I’ll be trying out a new review format here, just to see if I like it better than my usual “categories” stuff)
