God of War review

April 23rd, 2018 No comments

So I never liked the God of War series. Last time I really talked about it was back when the demo for 3 came out. I figured I’d give the series another chance, hated the demo (for the same reason I didn’t like previous games in the series) so I wrote a negative post about it, and my old hosting got absolutely destroyed by a massive DDoS attack due to my “incorrect” opinion (the internet was not having any of that) and the hosting company kicked me out so I had to transfer the site to a new host. True story. I had no hype for this God of War either, but I figured I’d give it a chance because they looked to be changing a lot. And it was 50$ (canadian) to pre-order it during E3 last year and stuff rather than the usual 80$… so why not.

When a game gets 10/10 scores everywhere, it changes the public’s expectations a lot. And when God of War was covered in that score a week before release… all it did was raise my doubts. Why? Because the reviews were all weird.

Let’s see if it’s worth all the 10/10 scores, shall we? Let’s go!

Why so few save points in RPGs? – A rant + A micro-review for the latest Atelier game

April 1st, 2018 No comments

So once again I made the classic mistake. I was playing an RPG for a while, didn’t save a lot, something happened (in this case, my Switch crashed… I’ll speak about this quickly), and I lost HOURS of gameplay and am thus giving up on the game.

The game in question is Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings, an RPG by Gust in a long-running series (since the PS1) which has been getting near-yearly releases since 2001. But it’s really not a problem exclusive to that game, I’ve encountered it many many times before.

So I’m making a post to complain about the lack of save points in RPGs nowadays. I don’t rant a lot, but this is something I’ve complained about too much not to do a fuller post about.

Let’s go!

(no this isn’t an april fools’ thing, this is a legit post about the game mechanic of saving your progress in an RPG… I have no life)

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom review

March 30th, 2018 No comments

Ni-no-Kuni 2
Ni no Kuni was a really cool game on PS3. The collaboration with Studio Ghibli was brilliant. The visuals were absolutely amazing, alongside the anime cutscenes animated by Studio Ghibli themselves.

This is a follow-up where Ghibli has no involvement (some people who worked on the original game did though), but clearly there’s a different feel to it.

So I played through it, did a lot but not all of the side quests, and spent around 28 hours on.

Games coming out in April 2018

March 30th, 2018 No comments

So another month with not lots of posts. Just not too many noteworthy games coming out this year, the few that people seem to like so far this year either suck, and there’s like one or two I particularly care about but they seem pretty good. However I do have a review coming for Ni no Kuni 2, and I’ll be starting up my first Atelier game in years after that, and there’s a few things coming in April I might talk about. I wish I could actually get some content out on more frequently but it’s just not happening.

So in the meantime here’s the monthly list of upcoming games!

So this month there’s: a PC game, 4 multiplats, 4 Switch things (technically 5 but whatever) and 2 PS4 games.

Usual disclaimer: This includes either games I’m interested in, games that may be/become popular and random stuff in-between… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning for any reason. Probably missing stuff because game companies are shit about announcing release dates nowadays (and good at delaying games near release), and I’m not gonna dig through the hundreds of trash indie games that come out on Steam every day to find the one or 2 okay ones that pop up occasionally. So if there’s no/few indie games here, it’s pretty normal.

Also I’m skipping a bunch of indie stuff (usually ports) on Switch, and maybe some other stuff, I dunno (it seems like Ys VIII is getting a PC release this month but I can’t find a date… I only care about the Switch release TBH).

Games I won’t review – Dragon Quest Builders

February 21st, 2018 No comments

Dragon Quest Builders

I skipped this game when it came out previously on Vita and PS4 because I don’t buy console versions of games that are also on handhelds, and the Vita version didn’t get a physical release. So getting it on Switch appeased both issues at once!

So I make it no secret that I don’t like Minecraft. It’s boring and pointless and the whole “creativity” thing just means nothing to me. I play games for the game design and challenge. So putting a Dragon Quest skin on Minecraft and adding a storyline and quests and stuff? Alright you got my attention.

And yet here I am, not reviewing it. Why am I not reviewing Dragon Quest Builders? Well read on and you’ll see!

Celeste review

February 11th, 2018 No comments

I’m actually really having trouble to even figure out what to say about this game. I finished it over a week ago and I’m not quite sure what to write in a review. Not because it’s bad, that’s very much not the case. But at the same time it’s so… straightforward. So it took me a while to get into writing this review.

There’s not much to say about it pre-release, I saw some videos and thought it looked pretty good. It looked pretty similar to something like Super Meat Boy. So I grabbed it.

Read on! (This will be a fairly short review)

Games coming out in February 2018

January 28th, 2018 No comments

Well January was pretty quiet gaming-wise, but it does seem like things will speed up a bit soon.

So this month I’m counting: 14 multiplats, 2 PS4 releases, 2 Switch releases and a 3DS release. Nothing really huge here. There’s 2 games I’m getting for sure and a bunch of maybes. We’ll see.

Also I’m skipping the boatload of indie game ports and third-party ports on Switch that will probably come out. I guess the more noteworthy ones this month would be… Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus and Payday 2? Pac-Man CE2 sucks though.

Dragon Ball FighterZ impressions

January 27th, 2018 No comments

The moment a Dragon Ball fighting game by Arc System Works was announced I was beyond hyped. Then seeing it in action at E3 a few days later was just amazing. It looked exactly like the anime, I’d say moreso than any other DBZ game. I got into the closed beta some time ago (note: this was literally the last time I used my PS4 before yesterday… that console is so pointless), and I loved it. It was really fun and well-designed.

I’m not buying this game, at least not yet. I never end up playing fighting games that much when I do buy them, and this is another case of me finding the DLC to be excessively expensive, so if I get this at all, it’ll be a GotY edition. However, a friend bought it and came over to play it all evening yesterday, so I figured, since I’m probably never reviewing it, I better talk about it now.

This will be quick impressions rather than a full review. Let’s go.

Games I won’t review – 2017 leftovers

January 7th, 2018 No comments

So there’s a few indie games from 2017 I recently played and didn’t have time to post full reviews for. So here’s a few in my “Games I won’t review” format.

So today I’m not reviewing: Steamworld Dig 2, Ruiner and Pyre.

Let’s go!

Games coming out in January 2018

January 1st, 2018 No comments

Alright, I’m done with the 2017-2018 transition posts. They’re the reason this post was late, it would’ve been weird to put it in-between that stuff. I do have a couple other posts I want to write soon, reviews that I didn’t get to writing earlier (and one game I do need to finish before I review it). So I’m trying to keep this up.

So January… Not a lot of note is coming out, but there’s a few cool releases. We have 6 multiplats, 3 PS4 games (I’m pushing here, one’s an import) and a 3DS release. A slow start for the year, but hopefully things will get better as the year goes on.

Also I’m skipping what is likely a bunch of indie game ports on Switch, there’s a few cool ones this month like Furi.
