Well, that’s that, the best games of the 7th gen! Here’s quick links to all the posts.
Handhelds are always a very large portion of the gaming industry. This is shown largely by the DS being the second highest-selling gaming console of all time (and the Game Boy not far behind in third place), and right now the 3DS always outselling everything.
This is the final installment of this series of posts about the best 7th gen games, and there’s still quite a few good games left to mention.
Let’s do this!
Note: No particular order
Here’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a couple months, and that is a sort of send-off for the 7th generation. With the 8th gen gearing up fully with the final competitors entering the ring in a month, it’s nice to take a look back at what was the longest generation in gaming. Rather than complaining about all the bad things this generation brought, I’ll be talking about the good things: THE GAMES. While, undoubtedly, the 7th generation was a low point for the industry in many aspects, largely because of game devs and publishers being complete and utter idiots, we still got a bunch of really solid games.
I’ve been starting to see a few of these “top 10 games of the generation” posts/videos coming out, and man there’s something wrong with all of them. First… top 10 is FAR from enough to encompass the great games of the gen. Second… They all featured a lot of odd choices. I saw one that had Wii Sports on it… I mean… only 2 games in the whole gen were better than Wii Sports, are you for fucking real? Same with including CoD (even people who don’t like the series included it in their lists), what the hell?
So what I want to do here (instead of something completely worthless like a top 10 that includes total crap on it because “it was influential” and ignores tons of great games) is to make a completely arbitrary list of great games. No ranking at all, no limiting my numbers, no fucking CoD, just talking about great games.
I’ll make 5 posts total for this: This one talking about the consoles, one for all the great multiplat games, one for exclusive games, one for downloadable games and one for handheld games. I want to keep it short though, so don’t expect extensive reviews for each game on the lists.
So let’s start talking about the consoles! Yes, this is the one part here that will have some “negativity” (just being realistic), but the other 4 posts will be all about talking about the great games this gen!
And now the slow time of the year. July is usually very light on releases, one of the lightest months of the year except maybe for December, and this July is no exception other than for the 3DS.
We’re still getting some stuff. The 3DS has a staggering 4 releases, the Wii has a release, the PSP has a release, PSN and XBLA are getting something (I’m not sure when Jet Set Radio HD is supposed to come so I haven’t included it), and the NES is pretty likely to get something too. And it’s pretty much quality all-around.
Those include either games I’m interested in, or games that may be/become popular… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning, whether I’m personally hyped for it or not. No shovelware here.
No one expected this to be good, but who expected it to be a sub-standard military FPS with pointless slow real-time grid-based strategy segments and bad-looking aliens? Despite one original element, the game is nothing special, you’ve played a ton of better FPS this generation.
Blurb reviews are short 1 paragraph mini-reviews of games I’ve played and don’t feel like making full reviews of
June! Games! Stuff! Words! Yeah, I don’t have anything to say this month. Let’s just talk about the games that are coming out.
So there’s a couple things coming out in June. Let’s see… a 3DS release, a DS release, a PSP release, 2 Vita releases, a Wii release, a PS3 release, 3 Xbox 360 releases (whoa!) and five multiplatform releases… And even possibly another NES release! Seems like everything is getting something in june!
Those include either games I’m interested in, or games that may be/become popular… Basically anything I feel bears mentioning, whether I’m personally hyped for it or not.
The big occupied release schedule of the fall is finally starting! This is always a busy time for gamers, and we have TONS of stuff that seem potentially awesome coming out soon.
September sees a good amount of interesting/popular games: 7 multiplatform (Wii, PC, PS3, 360) releases, 8 PS3 releases, 3 3DS releases, 3 DS releases, 1 PSP release and 2 Xbox 360 releases. Don’t forget this only includes interesting or potentially popular games, and it maybe be missing what will be hidden gems. We never know.
So read on and see what you’ll be buying!
Wow, we’re really slow on posts, aren’t we? Well, hopefully we’ll speed back up soon, but for now, let’s look at the games coming out in April 2011. There’s basically not much coming out in the month, so let’s do this fast.
There’s 3 multi-platform games, 2 PS3 games, 1 Wii game and 2 PSP games.
There might be a DS release (that duke nukem game that shows up on every release list for every month but never ends up coming…. and wasn’t it renamed? Whatever), but I’m not holding off for it, so I might as well not list it. Surprisingly, there’s not a single game coming on the 3DS in April… not even shovelware (well some sites have 2 shovelware games in april, but others have the same games in May, so it’s impossible to know/care). Strange.
Read on and see what’s coming!
Ah, March. It’s frequently a pretty big month for game releases. This year it’s no exception, but not really because of the actual games coming out. This March sees the release of the next-generation of handheld consoles (note: next-generation will instantly become “current-generation” as soon as the 3DS comes out).
So this month we have: 18 3DS games for its launch, 10 multi-platform titles, 4 interesting DS games, 3 PS3 exclusives, 2 PC exclusives and 3 PSP games. There should be interesting games for everyone in March. And keep in mind those are just the interesting/popular titles, no shovelware in there.
Read on! Read more…
Well, I’m a bit late on the “next month’s release list” post, mostly because I had to finish all the Games of the Year posts, but now that we’re done with that we can look at what 2011 will bring to gaming, of course starting with January.
Being a fairly tame month, there’s only a few interesting releases: 3 multiplatform games, 2 PS3 exclusives, 3 DS games and 1 PSP game.
