Donkey Kong Country Returns review

November 29th, 2010

When Nintendo announced this at E3, I couldn’t have been happier. Donkey Kong has been either ignored, or been put in average to crap spin-offs (Barrel Blast, ugh). But finally there’s a new Donkey Kong Country, one of the best platforming series out there, or at the very least one of my favorites.

And then we saw gameplay… this just looked awesome. Not only graphically, but the gameplay looked so damn fun. I was hyped.

Read on and see if it lived up to the hype I had for it!

Sonic Colors review/impressions

November 29th, 2010

Sonic games on consoles have been pretty terrible after the Genesis. The Adventure series was a step in the right direction (I mean, all the non Sonic/Shadow levels sucked, but the Sonic and Shadow levels were good), but everything afterwards has sucked. The more recent Sonic Unleashed, however, DID get some praise. Why? Well, while half the levels were a completely terrible GoW rip-off, the speed-based levels did manage to find an audience. But… they weren’t actually any good, it’s just that, in contrast to the crappy Werehog levels, they actually seemed sort of fun.

Listening to the criticism from the previous game, Sega did what they thought was the logical thing, and made the whole game just like the daytime levels in Sonic Unleashed. Was it a good or bad thing?

Read on and see!

Games coming in December 2010

November 29th, 2010

Oh wow, I almost forgot to post this… mostly because there’s barely anything coming in December (that always confuses me).

So let’s go quick with this: There’s 3 worthwhile games coming out in December. 2 PC games, and 1 Wii game. Nothing on anything else.

Goldeneye 007 review

November 10th, 2010

Ah, Goldeneye. The N64 classic that remains to this day as one of the top console FPS ever. It was just so fun. It didn’t play like a simulator going for semi-realism like modern FPS, it really felt like a video game. It was completely unrealistic, featured fun missions, exploding chairs and one of the best local multiplayer for any FPS (well, I will say that I prefer Perfect Dark in that regard, but Goldeneye is more memorable nonetheless). Heck, as far as licensed games go, it’s quite staggering seeing that a lot of people associate Goldeneye to the video game rather than the movie. It’s THAT good. Very few licensed games manage to get that sort of status.

When this was announced at E3, I instantly thought “Awesome, a new Goldeneye! Maybe this one isn’t gonna suck like Rogue Agent! They better not screw it up…”. And lo and behold, they screwed it up. Whoops.

So yeah…. read on and see why I didn’t like James Bond’s latest game!

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 review

October 15th, 2010

Sonic 4! A true sequel to the Genesis series of Sonic games! Or so this is what it was advertised as. I wasn’t the only one who was caught by the hype.

But, as with most people, I was a slight bit skeptical about it since, you know, Sonic didn’t get a proper console game since… let’s say Adventure 2, but even that had a lot of lameness (AKA all the levels where you didn’t control Sonic/Shadow). The handheld games were okay, though never anywhere near the quality of the Genesis titles, but otherwise Sonic has really been having trouble, and frankly no one can deny that.

I did play the iPhone version when that came out, but I’ll comment on that later.

So read on and see if Sonic is moving away from sucking, or if he’s staying in his comfort zone of crap.
(I’ll be trying out a new review format here, just to see if I like it better than my usual “categories” stuff)

Games coming in September 2010

August 15th, 2010

Well, time for the gaming world to “recover” from the “drought” of the summer, so it’s time for a lot more “interesting”/noteworthy releases than in the last few months.

This time there’s releases on every system which is good. 3 DS releases, 2 PC releases, 3 PS3 exclusives, 2 PSP releases, 1 Wii release, 2 360 exclusive releases and 10 multiplatform releases. Everyone should at least find one interesting game to play in here.

So yeah, read on to see what possibly interesting games are comming in september 2010!

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing review

June 19th, 2010

What a weird title…. ANYWAYS, this is a Sonic racing game, and Sonic, rather than running, has to drive a car… that’s kinda weird, considering he can run faster than the speed of sound. He is joined by various All-Stars in the Sega library. Well, more like cult favorites, since very few of the racers could be considered actual All-Stars. And if you get the Xbox 360 version, Banjo and Kazooie join in on the fun… for some reason…

I sort of took my time before playing this, because I wasn’t sure if it would be any good, considering this is a post-Sonic 3 game in the Sonic franchise (I checked, Sonic CD was before 3), AND it’s a spin-off…

After a while I decided to rent it and sort of played non-stop since I got it… So read on and see if I really liked it or not!

Initial Impressions – Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love (Wii)

April 16th, 2010

I was rather excited for this game for 2 reasons. First, well it’s published by NISA, and second, it’s the first game in the long-running Sakura Taisen series to make it to America. So I definitely wanted to see what it was all about.

When I finally received it from the online game rental thingy, I couldn’t wait to try it… except it didn’t work on my Wii since it’s seemingly dual-layered, and somehow my Wii can’t read dual-layered discs (such as Super Smash Bros Brawl…dammit). But today I got the chance to go try it at a friend’s house, and put in 3 and a half hours of gameplay.

So here are my initial impressions of the game. I won’t write a full review, at least not for a while, unless I find the PS2 version for cheap, or if I rent the PS2 version.

Read on and see what I thought!

Games coming in April 2010

March 20th, 2010

March was a pretty hard-hitting month, with lots of huge releases across all consoles. Obviously April won’t compare…

But I wasn’t expecting such a low number of note-worthy releases. PS3, Xbox 360, PSP and PC get no interesting exclusive releases, so we’re left with just a few interesting multi-platform releases, 3 DS releases(including 1 japanese release), and 2 Wii releases. A very slow month indeed.

It might be a small month, but still, come and check what are the interesting games coming in April 2010!

As usual, Multiplatform releases first, ordered by date, and if the game is a japanese release it is marked accordingly.

Downloadable game review – Mega Man 10

March 2nd, 2010

AH yes, Capcom milking something that hasn’t really been milked since the early 90s. After the success(and awesomeness) of Mega Man 9, it was no surprise that people wanted more, and Capcom never misses the opportunity to make easy money.

Since the fans loved it so much, myself included, this game goes back to the NES style of Mega Man games again. Cover art and all. Yeah, I really love that cover art… The game features nostalgic graphics, nostalgic music and nostalgic gameplay.

Does it hold of as well as Mega Man 9, or should have Capcom stopped milking the cow already?
